Metaverse Messenger and SecondCast Rant
Cylindrian Rutabaga is the "resident of the week" over at Metaverse Messenger! Read it here (pdf).
I haven't read M2 in a while actually. You can imagine how surprised I was when I read "Last week’s front page story in the Messenger was entitled 'Yet another grid attack'"
Oh my, M2 picked up on the YAGA! YAGA for everyone! Cyl also mentions the new Linden coined phrase "grey goo" - because you can never have enough goo or YAGA folks.
On another note: SecondCast. The folks at Second Life Insider have a few recent blog entries discussing SecondCast the podcast "show". In fact Akela went so far as to ask for some podcast ideas suggesting SLI is considering making one of their own. My idea: don't do one.
Caveat: I am not a podcast consumer anyway. I'm also not a terrestrial, satellite or internet radio listener either. I don't listen to twit or diggnation or anything else, fyi. I have way too much awesome music to listen to on my iPod to take a crapshoot and listen to some possibly amusing folks make inside jokes with each other in the privacy of their living rooms. Yes, I'm overgeneralizing, I know, deal with it.
Caliandris Pendragon's blog post comes closest to summing up my thoughts. I've only listened to three SecondCast episodes.
The first I listened to because they were interviewing Cylindrian Rutabaga. Cyl was adorable, the interview was fine, the questions were fine, the rest of the show had a bit of humor but the whole thing mostly grated and annoyed me. I'd give that episode a 4 star rating with 1.5 of those stars solely in Cyl's court.
I then heard an episode with Koz Farina. He's an interesting person and his BlogHUD project is pretty darned cool. That episode gets about 2 stars from me. Once again I found it grating and boring but this time I thought the questions were weak and the inside jokes were too much.
Finally I listened to a "War of the Worlds" episode that included Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe. The idea seemed kinda cool on paper. Re-enact the controversial War of the Worlds radio broadcast in the perspective of a virtual grid under attack. However in reality, this one gets one star and put the nail in the coffin of any interest in this "podcast" or "netcast" or "weakcast". I was excited to hear Jay and Frogg play some music and take some interview questions. Instead I got a good idea, re-enact War of the Worlds, wrapped in one horribly underperformed, terribly grating and simply poorly executed mess. Jaycatt and Frogg? No interview at all from the file scanning and scrubbing I could manage. The songs seemed to be pre-recorded and were sliced and diced to fade in with the theme of the show. Sad and abusive to my two favorite live artists - these guys are awesome and deserve better treatment than simple background fodder for your play. Perhaps they did manage to get a complete song in there. I just couldn't handle listening to it all that long - the poor acting was hurting my head.
OK, whew. That's off my chest. Harsh, yes, honest, yes. I gave the show a try, after all, so I hope that's worth something. This is one of the few podcasts I've bothered to even try listening to at all so that must be worth an implicit star right there, no? Perhaps they'll improve with time and practice. I wish them the best and they certainly already have a huge listener base which is great for them. I'm just not into that kind of entertainment. I shall now be quiet on the subject as my opinion has been registered with the ministry of we-really-don't-give-a-shit-anyway and filed in triplicate.
I hope that SLI does not start doing a podcast. They already have a fine medium for interviews and information, it's called a blog.

Yeah, we were only asked to provide some music... Even my "hello there" at the beginning was gleaned from a live show :D I would love to do a real interview on the podcast with them, I hope they ask! That would be a blast ^^

that upsets me too...frogg and jaycatt are the most accomplished music duo in Second Life and deserve to be treated that way. they have worked so hard and enjoy what they do so much, they should do a whole podcast JUST FOR THEM!! musicians in sl are not taken seriously by certain "sects". as far as internet radio, SL has 2 stations that are working HARD to promote the Indie SL Musician...and for that I am most thankful...wicked karma radio network and phreak radio.

Cyl - I think you hit your head on the mic when stepping down. Care to try the dismount again?

I lost a comment that just came in and was marked as junk. It was about how, even though it's on an old post, it's worth mentioning that Linden Lab did not "coin grey goo" and that one could find details at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_goo
I'll note that I was referring to the use of the term as it refers to Second Life but the point is taken.
