Interview: Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe
In preparation for Thursday's 5PM show by Jaycatt and Frogg to kick off weekly live music at the Shelter in Exile I decided to interview the dynamic duo.
I've done a bit more editing on this interview than I expected to. I removed login/logoff notices of course, but I also removed time stamps, edited a few typos and misspellings. The biggest change is that I reodered some of the questions to try to make things flow a bit easier for the reader.
Topic we cover range from the musical to the personal. If you continue on below the fold expect to read about their thoughts on the state of music in Second Life, their experience with relaycasting, their upcoming recording session for a new duet CD, and what what they enjoy in SL beyond performing music for us to appreciate.
You'll also get a hint as to what MTV was doing in Seattle recently.
Welcome
Dolmere: Hi Jaycatt, Frogg, welcome to the new Shelter in Exile stage
Jaycatt Nico:: Thanks!
Dolmere: If you pan your camera back you'll see the place is shaped like an "L"
Dolmere: The inside of the "L" is where the 3 regions meet
On Voting
Dolmere: Both: Did you vote today?
Jaycatt Nico:: No I didn't
Frogg Marlowe:: vote?
Jaycatt Nico:: Do we need to elaborate, that kind of thing? hehe
Dolmere: No :)
"Jaycatt Jams" and "Ain't No Women" CDs on the Web
Dolmere: Your CDs are available from http://www.jaycattnico.com/ and http://www.froggmarlowe.com - how have sales been?
Frogg Marlowe: They trickle in now and then
Jaycatt Nico: Not bad really, I am happy to sell the ones I have, and to be able to keep up with demand :D
Dolmere: Do you guys see spikes in sales after in-world shows? Is there any particular activity in-world or out that you can draw a direct line to increased CD sales?
Frogg Marlowe: it's usually after a show I'll see the orders in my email, yeah
Jaycatt Nico: It does seem that the most sales occur after shows, I think because someone new will be there, find out about the CD, and decide to get it
Dolmere: that's great - good luck with continued sales guys - the CDs are so very worth owning
Dolmere: By the way, Frogg, - I love your embeded music player. It's a fairly recent addition. Who manages your web presence?
Frogg Marlowe: Jay 8)
Jaycatt Nico: Yep :D
Jaycatt Nico: I manage the page and the domain for the most part
Jaycatt Nico: I found the plugin somewhere, can't quite remember
Dolmere: Awesome - the in-page player is a nice touch Jay
Dolmere: Frogg, your CD is entitled "Ain't No Women". I've heard you mention that you named the CD and the title track after a comment a friend made about Second Life. Would you share that story?
Frogg Marlowe: a friend of mine kept warning me not to believe any of the women I see in SL were actually women
Frogg Marlowe: I'm not sure, but I think the exact words were "all the chicks are dudes"
Dolmere: hahaa
Dolmere: "Ain't No Women" has a much more musical ring to it
Frogg Marlowe: 8)
Dolmere: Why don't you publish your lyrics on your website.
Frogg Marlowe: I'm hopeless when it comes to anything dealing with beauracracy or paperwork
Jaycatt Nico: Oh, I thought it gave you an air of mystery
Dolmere: haha
Jaycatt Nico: hehe
Dolmere: What does your setup look like? What gear do you use in order to get your wonderful sounds out to the SL residents?
Frogg Marlowe: many cables and gadgets
Jaycatt Nico: I have a Yamaha P140 I use as the piano... And we have a USB mixer
Jaycatt Nico: two microphones, and Frogg's guitar
Jaycatt Nico: I use the voice microphone for the melodica with mixed results
Jaycatt Nico: hehe
Frogg Marlowe: I've also usually got the harmonica rack on, too
Jaycatt Nico: Oh yeah!
Dolmere: "the rack" - next it will be "the noose"
Dolmere: :)
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Frogg Marlowe: no, thumbscrews
Jaycatt Blogs
Dolmere: Jaycatt: you have been blogging at http://jaycatt.blogspot.com/ for a short while now. I see you also have other websites. Tell me a bit about them and your thoughts on blogging please.
Jaycatt Nico: Well, I kept a journal for many years as a teenager, and since I'm a cube slave 8-5 weekdays, it's just a natural thing to want to type somewhere other than Excel :D
Jaycatt Nico: And as for my other websites
Jaycatt Nico: I do have a webpage with things like recipes and such
Jaycatt Nico: That's in the tree of http://www.efn.org/~marcl
Dolmere: I have found reading your writing to be quite enjoyable
Jaycatt Nico: Thanks! I always enjoyed writing
Thursdays With Jaycatt and Dent, Arthur Dent
Dolmere: Jaycatt: Other than this Friday's time off to go record I understand you have another activity coming up soon. What are you doing Thursday night after you and Frogg complete your gig at the Shelter in Exile?
Frogg Marlowe: lol, yeah
Jaycatt Nico: Yes, at 8pm on Thursday I am hosting the second installment of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series, episodes three and four of the BBC radio show
Frogg Marlowe: never could quite get the hand of thursdays....
Jaycatt Nico: It was quite a bit of fun last week, when people came to hear the start of it all
Dolmere: I was present for the latter part of it and agree it was a blast
Dolmere: I'd encourage anyone with a passing interested in the Guide to attend and get their own free towel
Dolmere: only the hoopy froods know where their towels are, after all
Long Weekend - For the Record
Dolmere: Jaycatt details a bit about an upcoming recording session in a recent blog post at http://jaycatt.blogspot.com/2006/11/new-blog-post.html. You'll be going to a rented beach house with your home studio gear to do the recording.
Dolmere: Can you guys tell us any more about it? For instance, are you working with any sort of a producer or are you seeking any external input or assistance in the process?
Jaycatt Nico: Well, we're grabbing a large jeep, and on Friday loading it up with all the music equipment, plus laptop, and heading to a house a work friend has for rent on the coast
Jaycatt Nico: We're going to start recording some (or maybe all) of the upcoming album
Jaycatt Nico: We've been doing it all just ourselves
Frogg Marlowe: we're big on self sufficiency
Frogg Marlowe: :)
Jaycatt Nico: But I've got plans to maybe use a CD printer outside the house if the prices are right :D
Dolmere: nice
Jaycatt Nico: The beach house weekend will be the perfect setting for recording... No internet access and a 12 inch tv
Dolmere: no distractions
Frogg Marlowe: there's a tv?
Jaycatt Nico: Except for the beach outside :D
Jaycatt Nico: Oh yeah
Jaycatt Nico: heh
Jaycatt Nico: And a phone!
Frogg Marlowe: won't be a distraction unless there's cable, too
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: There might be ;)
Frogg Marlowe: uh oh.....
Jaycatt Nico: lol
Dolmere: ask for the cable free package
Hamlet Article Recap
Dolmere: Frogg, back in July of 2005 you were featured in a blog article by Hamlet Linden (now Hamlet Au). Did you think Hamlet did a good job of reporting on you (http://secondlife.blogs.com/nwn/2005/07/mr_froggs_wild_.html)?
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Frogg Marlowe: Hamlet's a great guy
Frogg Marlowe: but he did get a few of the facts wrong, lol
Jaycatt Nico: That's one of the more in-depth articles I've seen about you so far
Frogg Marlowe: can't remember specifically what, though
Dolmere: Perhaps some of my other questions will guide that answer a bit then
Dolmere: If that's ok
Frogg Marlowe: 8)
Jaycatt Nico: Personally, I'd love to do a podcast interview someday :D
Dolmere: I wish SecondCast had gotten the podcast right with you two
Frogg Marlowe: rofl
Frogg Marlowe: they want to do a real one
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: Oh cool!
Dolmere: instead I felt they abused your generosity
Frogg Marlowe: no, no, I appreciated being used in farce that way
Dolmere: awesome Frogg - that will give me reason to listen to another of their shows
Dolmere: Frogg, you mentioned back injuries in that article. Where does that stand at this point? Can we count you amongst the completely healed?
Frogg Marlowe: no
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Frogg Marlowe: I still have to be very very careful
Jaycatt Nico: I help with the heavy equipment and shoo him out of the area if I'm working on something heavy lol
Frogg Marlowe: can't lift much of anything
Dolmere: I shall send you a roadie
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Dolmere: you must lift no more than a guitar pick or strap
Dolmere: and will play with your guitar leaning on the backs of roadies
Frogg Marlowe: rofl
Frogg Marlowe: I'm not quite that crippled
Frogg Marlowe: but close
Frogg Marlowe: laughs
Jaycatt Nico: Roadies that used to be in bands called White Trash
Dolmere: hahaa
Frogg Marlowe: whatch your mouth, Jay, you know I'm half hillbilly!
Dolmere: Frogg, my understanding is that you are self employed. How do you make an income?
Frogg Marlowe: what little I make comes primarily from the SL shows I play
Frogg Marlowe: I've not had time for any of the other odd jobs I used to do for a while now
Dolmere: Frogg, you spent two months living on the streets. What was the biggest lesson you took away from the experience?
Frogg Marlowe: hmm
Frogg Marlowe: appreciate small comforts
Frogg Marlowe: a lot of my thoughts about it ended up in a song that I wrote a few years later, actually
Frogg Marlowe: "Pariah Cycle" was written while I had a job and a home, but was noticing how homeless people got treated
Frogg Marlowe: it's a vicious circle, can't get a job without a home, can't get a home without a job
Dolmere: have to have an address to send a check to, etc
Frogg Marlowe: gotta have a phone number for them to call for you to come in for the interview
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: Isn't that where you picked up harmonica though too?
Frogg Marlowe: it was actually just before that period
Jaycatt Nico: Oh, okay, couldn't quite remember
Dolmere: How has your attitude changed towards homeless citizens now? (not counting SL residents) - Do you find yourself behaving differently in the same settings?
Frogg Marlowe: well, I hardly leave the house anymore, lol
Frogg Marlowe: but I try to treat everybody with respect
Frogg Marlowe: so long as they're polite
How Would You Characterize Yourself?
Dolmere: Both: Would you characterize yourself as a professional musician?
Frogg Marlowe: well, at this point, i think I'd have to
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Dolmere: Given that it's your primary source of income
Frogg Marlowe: exactly
Jaycatt Nico: I categorize myself as a hobbiest :D But boy wouldn't it be neat if I could switch that to professional :D
On Inspiration
Dolmere: Both: What inspires you musicially and lyrically? When does the muse speak to you the most?
Jaycatt Nico: For me, I just really like certain chord progressions... The way it all flows... So I'm attracted to certain types of music and tend to want to emulate them
Jaycatt Nico: It helps that I don't have to come up with lyrics :D
Frogg Marlowe: sometimes I don't really even know what music is...
Frogg Marlowe: I grew up listening to a lot of classical and opera
Frogg Marlowe: Jay got me into the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, Fresh Aire,
Jaycatt Nico: My father was a book salesman and could get credit at Tower Records/Books, so we had a lot of albums around the house
Frogg Marlowe: lol, asking me about what inspires me musically is more a conversation starter than a simple question
Dolmere: Frogg - that's cool - and worthy of a blog entry on its own one day then - perhaps I'll ask that one question next time you play here :)
Frogg Marlowe: cool 8)
Dolmere: Jaycatt, you mention occasionally at your live shows that Rosa Gardner helped you name your song "Seasons". Can you share more of that story?
Jaycatt Nico: Well, Rosa and I Skype pretty much every day, and sometimes I will noodle on the piano real-time while she is listening... The song that became Seasons started out as a little thing I would just find myself doing when I wasn't playing anything in particular. So, I asked what she thought it sounded like, and she noticed the different parts, like seasons.
Dolmere: Correlating the movements of the song to the seasons, nice
Jaycatt Nico: Still one of my favorite songs, although I do get my occasional "new kid in town" running through my head :)
Frogg Marlowe: ewww
Frogg Marlowe: you like new kids?
Dolmere: On the block?
Jaycatt Nico: The Eagles song, if anything lol
Frogg Marlowe: laughs
Real and Virtual Venues
Dolmere: Frogg, you mentioned in Hamlet's article that you were hosting an open mic in your area. Do you still host an open mic night?
Frogg Marlowe: no, haven't done that in a while
Dolmere: Both: Have you been playing out in any local RL clubs?
Frogg Marlowe: we played one recently
Jaycatt Nico: I have played four places: My company holiday banquet thingy, an open mic, the SLCC, and a place we played recently for an hour
Jaycatt Nico: The hour is the longest I've played in RL, well... I guess we did that block party too lol
Jaycatt Nico: I would love to do more RL gigs though
Jaycatt Nico: It's an interesting experience to be in the thick of it all
Jaycatt Nico: Essentially, in SL we play the same place every night
Jaycatt Nico: My bonus room
Dolmere: Oh, you did an hour? What were you two paid for bringing your original music to an eager crowd in your local area?
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Frogg Marlowe: we were paid two beers
Frogg Marlowe: each
Jaycatt Nico: Yeah, two beers!
Jaycatt Nico: lol
Jaycatt Nico: goes "woo hoo!"
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: Then we each bought an $8 sandwich
Frogg Marlowe: well, it could've been two shots each
Dolmere: So not quite enough to eat on for the week?
Jaycatt Nico: I should have gone for the shots...
Jaycatt Nico: Oh no... and it was an early time, 5pm. Not the best hour for crowds
Dolmere: Speaking of venues - what is your favorite venue to play in Second Life? (knowing that they're all basically the same looking - your living room)
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: That's tough... I like venues where the show goes well, mostly :D
Frogg Marlowe: I like 'em all
Frogg Marlowe: I especially like the ones that people show up to
Jaycatt Nico: Oh yes, those are especially nice ^^
Dolmere: How was SLCC playing live for residents versus playing live through the internet to the same attendees?
Jaycatt Nico: I loved it... But then again I thought the whole idea of meeting a bunch of strangers you already knew was quite a kick
Frogg Marlowe: I liked how they raised their lit cellphones and gadgets instead of lighters during "Freebird"
Dolmere: haha
Jaycatt Nico: lol yeah
Jaycatt Nico: I remember that
Jaycatt Nico: I have to say, the one person I really wanted to meet when I found out he was going was Travis
Frogg Marlowe: I was really glad I got to meet him
Jaycatt Nico: And he was just the cool guy I thought he was, really easy to get to know
Frogg Marlowe: he didn't look anything like a dog, though...
Jaycatt Nico: lol
Dolmere: I think he's the kindest, gentlest most caring and giving soul, Travis is awesome
The State of the Pond
Dolmere: Who are your favorite Second Life musicians?
Frogg Marlowe: cylindrian, mel, melvin, moe, astrin, lyndon, jaynine, neil, bill and pam, rol hocken, dabigdawg, slimmie, ricardo, komuso
Frogg Marlowe: ummmmm
Jaycatt Nico: I'm very fond of Cylindrian Rutabaga, not only because we got to play in San Francisco together, but I also really enjoy her style... Mel Cheeky, Lyndon Heart, Ricardo Sprocket, jaynine, Astrin, Moe... There's so many, it's hard to say
Frogg Marlowe: too many
Jaycatt Nico: I like them all in different ways
Frogg Marlowe: s'funny
Frogg Marlowe: melvin took, juel resistance, jaynine scarborough and jay and I are all born in march
Frogg Marlowe: within a week of each other
Dolmere: wow - that's actaully pretty wild
Dolmere: coincidence supreme
Dolmere: you're all so geographically dispersed
Frogg Marlowe: pisces make good musicians 8)
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Dolmere: Tell me about the relaycast event I missed. Was it tough to setup? Did you like doing the gig?
Frogg Marlowe: Loved it! Only wish I could've heard what komuso played with us as we played it
Frogg Marlowe: and it was easy setup for me, no differnt than usual.... (Jay handled it)
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Dolmere: haha
Frogg Marlowe: I just sit down and play
Dolmere: Jay's the computer genius, eh?
Frogg Marlowe: push a few buttons
Frogg Marlowe: yup
Dolmere: I'd love the idea of a live rehearsal online, I think so many people would love it, but the latency is just too high to make it possible at this point
Dolmere: the relaycast is certainly the next best thing but someone has to play blind
Frogg Marlowe: but so long as the blind player is solid, and the other knows how to follow, everything's fine
Dolmere: who else would you want to do a relay with if given the choice?
Frogg Marlowe: astrin's guitar, moe's sax, and jaynine's voice.... whew - good stuff
Frogg Marlowe: I'll always love playing music with cylindrian.....
Frogg Marlowe: would also love to sing with jaynine or mel cheeky
Dolmere: What are your thoughts on the current state of live music in Second Life?
Jaycatt Nico: I'm estatic! I'm so excited that it is just taking off like crazy
Frogg Marlowe: really turning into a thriving scene
Frogg Marlowe: lotta life in it 8)
Jaycatt Nico: I hear new musicians almost every time I have time to see a show :D
Jaycatt Nico: I remember when we first started out
Dolmere: There are indeed new musicians seemingly everywhere, very promising.
Jaycatt Nico: There was just a few of us, and we would worry about playing on nights another performer was
Jaycatt Nico: Now, there's probably 10 shows a night
Jaycatt Nico: And it's wonderful, so many options and places to hear live music
Dolmere: Do you think the influx of live acts will have a negative impact in the long run? Muddy the water, dilute the broth?
Jaycatt Nico: As long as people keep joining SL, there will always been an audience... I don't think there can ever be too many musicians :D
Jaycatt Nico: I would love to see all styles represented too
Dolmere: Jaycat the positivist and optomist, love it
Jaycatt Nico: Just recently I've heard a new age musician, and haven't heard too many of those before
Frogg Marlowe: I'd actually like to try to add to that answer....
Jaycatt Nico: I'd love to see reggae, etc added to what's in SL :D
Frogg Marlowe: so many musicians can only inspire each other to strive to improve
Frogg Marlowe: and I think I saw that there was a punk rock band playing tonight
Jaycatt Nico: That's awesome... More full bands would be wonderful too
Frogg Marlowe: to be in such a healthy thriving live music scene can only help me strive to be a better musician
Jaycatt Nico: I love all styles, but there aren't as many full ensembles than singles, so it's great when people jump in with that
Jaycatt's Lungs
Dolmere: Jaycatt, you don't sing on too many songs. What songs do you sing on and why?
Jaycatt Nico: Well, actually, as a kid I used to sing in a children's choir, but that was a long time ago, heh... I'm just getting back into singing some, but I haven't sung much because I have trouble playing complex stuff when I also have to think about singing.
Jaycatt Nico: I can do the simple chords, and spice it up when the lyrics stop, but that's something I need to work at.
Jaycatt Nico: I do sing as Kermit the Frog on Rainbow Connection though
Frogg Marlowe: Jay used to be a better singer than me
Frogg Marlowe: but then he quit singing, and I took lessons
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Dolmere: practice - you both get plenty of that - you play an average of how many shows a week here?
Jaycatt Nico: Hmm
Jaycatt Nico: Like 4? 5?
Jaycatt Nico: Maybe even 6
Dolmere: How much do you practice offline together?
Jaycatt Nico: We try to do it once a week
Frogg Marlowe: we're SUPPOSED to do it thursdays.....
Jaycatt Nico: hehe
Jaycatt Nico: Well this Thursday is a show
Frogg Marlowe: so are many Thursdays, lol
Dolmere: What is a melodica?
Jaycatt Nico: A melodica is kind of like a harmonica, in the way it has the reeds anyway. It's a mouthpiece attached to a keyboard, really
Jaycatt Nico: You blow into it, and the reeds where the keyboard notes are pressed down sound... I love the accordian sound it gives
Dolmere: How did you learn about the melodica?
Jaycatt Nico: Well, I had seen them around, on TV and as toys... And figured I could probably pick it up easy since it was practically a piano
Jaycatt Nico: But they're not exactly toys
Jaycatt Nico: Well, not all of them... Mine was about $80
Dolmere: You play about two songs with the melodica
Jaycatt Nico: Yes, that's right
Dolmere: and the sound it gives really makes them standout in your set
Dolmere: Frogg: when did you and Jay first introduce the meoldica into the set?
Frogg Marlowe: a few months ago, I think
Dolmere: So arethose songs new as of a few months ago - or did you preform them and adapt melodica to them afterwards?
Frogg Marlowe: I already played them
Frogg Marlowe: but they got more special after Jay started adding to them
Playing Favorites
Dolmere: Both: What are your personal favorite songs from your set?
Frogg Marlowe: 8)
Frogg Marlowe: tough call....
Frogg Marlowe: I get a different ones stuck in my head each morning
Jaycatt Nico: My current favorite is 33.3 Degrees.... but most of the others are close ;) Never Argue (With the Weather) is up there too
Frogg Marlowe: My fingers always seem to want to play "Upright and Respirating"...
Dolmere: I wonder if most audience members get the lyrical importance of the long breath at the end of "Upright and Respirating", or if most people just see it as a wonderfully long note that you sing
Jaycatt Nico: is always amazed how long Frogg can hold that note... Seems he breaks a record every other time we play it :D
Frogg Marlowe: naw
Frogg Marlowe: sometimes I forget to breathe before the note
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: I'm playing along and saying "okaaaay... now! No, um, nnoooooow!"
Dolmere: The deep breath intake and gasping afterwards plays well, and it wasn't until I'd heard it live a few times that its significance to the rest of the song came clear actually
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: Frogg had to clue me in
Dolmere: How do you guys decide on cover songs?
Frogg Marlowe: first, we gotta like the song
Frogg Marlowe: then, if it's easy to play, we play it ;)
Jaycatt Nico: One of us will hear one, like it, and say "Oh, hey this might be cool, what are the chords?" If they are impossible it goes in the maybe pile... If it looks okay, then we start playing it right then
Jaycatt Nico: lol
Frogg Marlowe: (there are still a lotta chords I can't play on guitar)
Jaycatt Nico: With piano sometimes the chords aren't important, so much... Especially if it's just a melody line on piano
Frogg Marlowe: I'm a little embarrassed at how quickly we've gotten some of them together, lol
Dolmere: I notice that you improv a lot during shows - is that a way of writing song sketches together, practicing or just killing time?
Jaycatt Nico: It's just fun ^^
Frogg Marlowe: it's more a function of me getting a bit unfocused
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: Spontaneous fun, that is
Frogg Marlowe: "goofing off"
Jaycatt Nico: I love to hear new music, stuff that's in my head played out for my ears
Jaycatt Nico: And when it works, it's like a direct pipeline from one to the other :D
Jaycatt Nico: Best way to find it is to play something you never played before
Frogg's Background
Dolmere: Frogg: I've noticed you tinkering on bass a bit lately on some of Jaycatt's previously piano only tunes, getting playful with it
Frogg Marlowe: yeah 8)
Frogg Marlowe: I hope to do more of that
Frogg Marlowe: the last year has been a fantastic exploration as a musician
Dolmere: you mentioned that you felt you have grown as a musician quite a bit when we last spoke
Frogg Marlowe: got back into school and studied some music theory
Dolmere: I didn't kow that, awesome
Dolmere: back to the fundamentals
Frogg Marlowe: yup
Dolmere: What is your educational background prior?
Frogg Marlowe: I was a theater major at a community college, and a vocal music minor
Frogg Marlowe: my teacher's teacher had been Robert Mcferrin senior, Bobby's dad
Frogg Marlowe: learned all my jazz songs from him
Frogg Marlowe: the ones I occasionally do acapella
Dolmere: like "Summertime" and "Ain't Misbehavin'"?
Frogg Marlowe: and "My Funny Valentine", "God Bless the Child", "Satin Doll", "Stella by Starlight"
Frogg Marlowe: tho I'm not sure if I've ever done those last two at any shows
Dolmere: and I've missed the others apparently :(
Frogg Marlowe: no worries, I've not done much acapella since picking up the guitar
Getting a Bit Personal
Dolmere: Both: What are your strongest traits?
Jaycatt Nico: I'm very empathic :D
Frogg Marlowe: does laziness count as a strong trait?
Frogg Marlowe: 8)
Jaycatt Nico: lol
Dolmere: haha
Dolmere: yup
Dolmere: Both: What are your long term goals? (laziness?)
Jaycatt Nico: I like to sigh and say "Wouldn't it be grand to be able to quit my cube job and play music and be in SL for a living?"
Frogg Marlowe: "make enough money playing music that I can really call myself a professional musician with a straight face"
Frogg Marlowe: 8)
Jaycatt Nico: And I want to be the All-Being, Master of Time, Space, and Dimension... 'Cause ya gotta have goals
Frogg Marlowe: ooo, me too
Jaycatt Nico: Apologies to Steve Martin
Frogg Marlowe: then I wanna go to Europe
Jaycatt Nico: LOL
Dolmere: Do you have any goofy stories about your RL roomie?
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: lol
Frogg Marlowe: shoots Jay a dirty look
Jaycatt Nico: haha
Frogg Marlowe: laughs
Frogg Marlowe: we're more like brothers than anything
Frogg Marlowe: we each have our seperate lives
Jaycatt Nico: Yeah, so if he was in trouble and I was there to see it I probably was too
Frogg Marlowe: but we did grow up together
Frogg Marlowe: discovered booze together
Jaycatt Nico: Yeah, known each other since grade school
Dolmere: friends since grade school, right?
Jaycatt Nico: Yep yep
Frogg Marlowe: we met sometime around 1st grade, yeah
Jaycatt Nico: Wasn't hard, you were just a block and a half away too
Dolmere: What other activities do you guys do in Second Life?
Jaycatt Nico: I like to sail, and I used to watch movies...
Jaycatt Nico: Now I build or attend shows mostly too
Frogg Marlowe: I like to fly vehicles very high into the sky, and then delete them, and plummet to the cround
Jaycatt Nico: lol Frogg
Frogg Marlowe: sailing's cool too
Jaycatt Nico: I still like exploring too
Frogg Marlowe: not seen NEARLY enough movies in here
Dolmere: Some of my friends want me to ask you "What do you look for in a woman?"
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Frogg Marlowe: so hard to say
Frogg Marlowe: over the years I've dated a lot of different kinds of women
Frogg Marlowe: I like a smart woman who laughs at my stupid jokes
Jaycatt Nico: lol
Dolmere: I think you're seen as folk heroes or desirable rock gods around here
Frogg Marlowe: blushes
Jaycatt Nico: Aww
Frogg Marlowe: I like being able to fade into the background
Frogg Marlowe: it's awesome 8)
On Their Avatars
Dolmere: Jaycatt: Where did you get your well known cat style avatar?
Jaycatt Nico: I wear a Luskwood avatar... For the last year I wore the original siamese cat one, but then I finally got the upgrade, all except for the hair, which I just kind of got used to the style of in the old one
Jaycatt Nico: I don't see anyone else wearing them really, hardly see any siamese anymore
Dolmere: cool, Luskwood is certainly a beautful place
Dolmere: Frogg, did you build your own avatar as Hamlet suggests?
Frogg Marlowe: and while I didn't actually build this avatar, I did put the pieces together
Dolmere: Frogg's mother often attends your concerts, isn't that right?
Frogg Marlowe: yeah
Jaycatt Nico: Yeah, she does :D I think that's so cool, that she learned SL to get to hear the shows
Dolmere: I agree
Frogg Marlowe: that's one of my favorite things about playing music in SL
Frogg Marlowe: that my mom can actually come to the shows
Dolmere: Frogg: did you have make your purple guitar for you?
Frogg Marlowe: Cua Curie made it
Note: Frogg wears a tiny frog avatar and wears a tiny purple guitar with it.
Frogg Marlowe: he'd made this small one for a friend of mine who played I think, 2 shows then quit...
Frogg Marlowe: I still may be able to get him back into SL
Frogg Marlowe: as he's trying to get our old band back together...
Dolmere: he was the fella mentioned in the Hamlet article other than Jaycatt
Dolmere: with a full band that would need a mature sim?
Frogg Marlowe: "Jonny Flash and the Exhibitionists"
Frogg Marlowe: I was the keyboardist/backup vocalist, check out http://www.jonnyflash.tk
Dolmere: is that link something I can share?
Frogg Marlowe: sure thing
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Frogg Marlowe: might scare some folk
Frogg Marlowe: rofl
Dolmere: Jonny Impfondo, is that the friend you're talking about?
Frogg Marlowe: yup 8)
Is there anything else we should know?
Frogg Marlowe: apparently the MTV thing's gonna air on the 15th
Jaycatt Nico: Oh wow!
Jaycatt Nico: The 15th?
Dolmere: what MTV thing??
Frogg Marlowe: I think that's what the email said
Frogg Marlowe: MTV came here and pointed cameras at us and asked us questions and stuff
Jaycatt Nico: It's part of "MTV News: You Hear It First "
Dolmere: A report on music in a virtual world perhaps?
Frogg Marlowe: takamura keiko was interviewed, too
Frogg Marlowe: yup
Jaycatt Nico: Yeah
Jaycatt Nico: I got interviewed too ^^ So I might be in some of it
Jaycatt Nico: I tried to come up with cool answers lol
Frogg Marlowe: I tried to not look like a jerk....
Frogg Marlowe: ;)
Dolmere: haha
Jaycatt Nico: I was sweating...
Jaycatt Nico: My jeans were dirty so I had to wear slacks lol
Frogg Marlowe: that light was really bright
Frogg Marlowe: I wore my "will work for lindens" shirt
Jaycatt Nico: Yeah! That was great
Frogg Marlowe: I haven't talked much about the MTV thing cuz who the hell knows if it's really gonna happen til it happens
Jaycatt Nico: Exactly
Frogg Marlowe: but word got out anyway, lol
Frogg Marlowe: I saw a couple video things done at SLCC
Frogg Marlowe: I was in one on spiketv.com
Frogg Marlowe: I said "yes, the technology exists where people can throw panties at us onstage"
Jaycatt Nico: Frogg made it into Rolling Stone, but it was just one quote :D
Jaycatt Nico: So you never know what they decide to use
Dolmere: The best bits end up on the editing room floor - or editing Mac's trash can
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: :D
Wrap Up and Goodbye
Dolmere: Well, I want to wrap with a thanks
Jaycatt Nico: You're welcome!
Dolmere: You two have been unusually kind to this strange skeleton
Jaycatt Nico: hehe
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: Well, you had some really good questions too
Dolmere: I appreciate all the time you've shared with me since I've know ya, and thank you for the music I enjoy so much
Frogg Marlowe: unusual kindness is the best kind
Jaycatt Nico: Fun to think of answers...
Frogg Marlowe: like water in the desert
Frogg Marlowe: 8)
Comments
Frogg and Jaycatt have certainly done very well performing at the Gin Rummy...if you'd like to catch 'em in a more intimate setting, they'll be playing the GR again on November 19, and on two dates in December.

Thanks for the great write-up Dolmere! It was a lot of fun getting interviewed by you. I'm hoping you do it as a regular thing with all the musicians playing at the Shelter in Exile venue, as I'd love to hear other people's responses too!
Can't wait for Thursday, woo! Should be a fun time for sure :D
