Challenge: Name Two Newbie Locations
I've talked to a few of my good friends in Second Life about a not-a-meme blog thread. We'll take turns on Sundays and Wednesdays posting a "challenge" to the others. We'll try to keep it Second Life related and more interesting than a top 10 list of favorite songs. We'll be attempting to use trackbacks against the original post to send our replies and when that fails we'll use comments in the original challenge blog entry. Hopefully we'll all be able to create a "not-a-meme" blog category where we will post our challenges and responses.
Today's challenge (posted by Dolmere Talamasca, yours truly):
Name two Second Life locations where you would take a new resident on a tour and why.
My response:
When I meet a new resident in-world I usually drop a "newbie info" folder on them to give them some items to read and some landmarks to visit. If time permits and the new resident seems friendly, witty and sharp I'll take them on a little mini tour. Two absolute must see places on my list of visits are YadNi's Junkyard and The GNUbie Store. Often if I'm giving a personal tour of these places I'll give the resident I'm taking around a few Linden dollars to spend so that they can buy some of the 1L items that catch their eye. Since most new residents start with a zero balance these days I consider it a nice gesture to get them started on their path of learning.
YadNi's Junkyard
YadNi's Junkyard was the first freebie location I found in Second Life and outfitted my inventory with tons of fun things to toy with and learn from.
I'll also note that right up the hill from the Junkyard is YadNi's Crazy Techs - his premium shop. It's in YadNi's big black pyramid of premium goods that I bought my skeleton avatar - and I LOVE that thing.
The first thing you should do when you get to the junkyard is wait. Then wait a bit more. It's a very full piece of land. In fact it's downright cluttered as most RL junkyards would be I imagine :) It takes a long time for the prims and textures to load on your machine and you won't appreciate the place quite as much as when you see it in its cluttered madness.
On the back wall you will find a large statue of YadNi himself pointing out some posters explaining the history of the junkyard. It's a cute read and worth the time.
The freebies are boxed up in categories and placed along the opposite wall. Each box is a 1L purchase but jammed pack with tons of goods. Yes, you are paying someone for their time and effort in having collected and organized free items together, you're also supporting the land costs of the place. It's a small price to pay and having been someone who puts forth effort to make a "free" environment work smoothly, on a much smaller scale, I can say first hand that it's a lot of effort and worth the minor tracking fee.
In the far corner is his "Freebies of the Month" corner - a nice place to stop back to once in a while to get all kinds of new and interesting goods.
The GNUbie Store
The GNUbie Store in Indigo is a light, friendly place. The store has a variety of completely free and some 1L to purchase items from skins to tattoos, from vehicles to homes, and even textures to build with.
The vendors in this store are quality items that have been marked down to give new residents an opportunity to own some nice items without a lot of starting funds. As the Readme sign says on the wall before you enter the store you are forbidden from reselling anything you purchase here. Please abide by their wishes!
Before you even enter the store itself you are presented with a few vendors of free furry avatars from the good folks at Luskwood, perfect for those new resis looking for a quick furry starter kit.
Overall I would say that this store is very well laid out. It has multiple floors of merchandise, one large main floor and a smaller second floor with additional vendors on display.
Comments
Unfortunately, my blog doesn't support trackback, but, I still blogged a response.

Dixie, thanks for taking part. I noticed that you did not add SLURLs. Would you add SLURLs to those locations in case a new resident is reading our blogs (I know, unlikely) and wants to take a self-guided tour?
:)

Coal Nelson posted her response - for some reason the trackback did not come through. So here is the url: http://www.lovelymachine.com/blog/2007/02/two_newbie_locations.html.
Coal points out the my short blog post title is not very PC. However, the actual challenge text from the blog post is the more PC "Name two Second Life locations where you would take a new resident on a tour and why." So I claim 50% accuracy!
