Contract for Live Music at SLCC Comes Under Scrutiny

foxyflwr Cure from Virtual Live Band and her own solo live music notified the Live Music Enthusiasts's group via IM about a few blog entries this evening:
  • Slim Warrior's blog - SL LIVE Music Blog - Contract?…. HA! Don’t sign it.
  • Komuso Tokugawa's blog - Metaverse Music Blog - Bloodsucking Vampires Infiltrate SLCC07!!! [Edit 7/4/07] Komuso's commentary was moved to his Metaverse Music Blog
  • The general idea is that a seemingly boilerplate "SLCC Audio Release Form" was sent to the artists invited to perform at SLCC this year. These artists are paying their own way and playing for free in the hopes of gaining exposure, expanding their following and supporting their community. The details of the release form/contract are painful.

It is my hope that any performer going on stage at SLCC strikes the majority of the language before sending in a signed copy or negotiates a separate deal. We're not talking about a guest speaker with a one-off presentation - we're talking about a live performer with their own IP.

At this time there is a reply from FlipperPA Peregrine, conference organizer, in Slim Warrior's blog entry comments. Flipper states:

Heya - just so you know, there is a method to our madness. We’ll be in touch with details explaining why these have been sent out, the contract restrictions we’re under (much of this comes from Unions regulations), and so forth. This is our first year as a non-profit corporation, so we are just getting our feet wet with being “fully legitimate,” and actually have an attorney on our staff this year. This could definitely have been communicated better - mea culpa on that one, but don’t fret quite yet, please!

Further comments appeared just before press time including a few from Nethermind Bliss.

One can hope that more agreeable terms can be struck and that the performers can reach a new audience while retaining the rights to their own bloody performance.

DJ DoubleDown has some insightful comments over at Slim Warrior's blog - he's posted his own blog post recently as well on this topic:

Slim says she's not going to play at this point. Hopefully the new release form/contract that Kei and Kaclick are working with Flip on will come out, satisfy everyone's angst, and Slim will change her mind with new positive vibes around.
