Los Arboles and Jira
Los Arboles Open Mic Again
I stopped by to watch the musicians at the Los Arboles open mic last night. I thought I would hang out for 20 minutes or so then head up to put more time into the book I'm currently reading. Right around the time I was about to head out I was contacted in IM and asked if I'd mind playing a set. It turns out that Patrick Lasalle was scheduled to play the last slot of the night and he had a RL event pop up so had to cancel. Patrick was kind enough to come in-world and alert Yxes (and Chel) that he was not going to be able to make it - kudos for being reponsible with your commitments, Patrick! I have those three new songs I recorded last week and I figured I could give them some more exercise so I agreed to play.
I started at about 7:40PM SLT and played for about 20 mins. I enjoyed the set and the group present was much fun. Sumar Morgan and Rosa Gardner had popped in a bit earlier, to see Patrick I think, and hung around to catch my set. Sporked and ChatBrat made it over from the Shelter and Chicki stopped by as well.
Rich Desoto came in at the end. He was not able to host the open mic last night so Yxes ran the whole thing. Oh, I found out how to pronounce that! "excess" or "x s" where the "y" is silent. Woot!
Quoting Mallow
After the open mic I was chatting with various folks. A few folks added themselves to my "Dolmere Basstastic Perversion Live" group in order to catch notices for upcoming shows, etc.
I made a new friend, Mallow Niven, who had inquired if I was playing before the last minute slot was offered to me and then hung around for my set. We were chatting along about various topics. I glanced at her profile and I found a really nice quote.
Dolmere Talamasca: wow - great quote in your second life profile: "Time is the currency of SL Friendship : My friends make me rich beyond measure."
Mallow Niven: thanks -- and it's mine own... lol
Mallow Niven: and it's exceedingly true
Dolmere Talamasca: agreed
I really like that quote - great job Mallow!
Anti "/" in Chat
Mallow Niven: why are you so anti / ?
Mallow Niven: or just a joke?
Dolmere Talamasca: not a joke
Dolmere Talamasca: I hate the slash in chat
Dolmere Talamasca: militant about it
I'm amazed. I'm simply amazed. I must be very bad at searching the jira bug database. I searched all projects for "typing", "typing sound", "keyboard" and "keyboard typing sound" and came up with nothing related to the annoying keyboard typing noise that drives many people batty in SL at live music shows and elsewhere. (Oh, searching for /0 and "/0" gave me a "HTTP Status 500 - type Exception report" error page. Lovely - LL does as good a job of managing search input as they do managing event listing input!)
It is my humble opinion that there should be a LAND setting to completely disable the keyboard typing sound. This way the land owners of clubs and other large gatherings do not need to ride the audience about how to use their clients. They don't have to teach them about "/" in chat or "/0" in chat or even "//" in chat.
- OK, since I brought it up:
- "/" before a line of text tells the system that you're typing on a "channel". So your typing animation, and better, typing sound do not play while constructing the sentence. Once you send the command your text appears in the chat channel as "/the thing this person said".
- "/0" before a line of text tells the system that you're typing on a "channel" as well - the /. When you send your text the system sees the number "0" which means "general chat channel" and responds by sending the message alone to the chat channel. The text that appears is "the thing this person said". So you look like you're just chatting but your avatar doesn't do the typey dance and fellow concert goers who can't find the fucking mute slider don't have to hear you clakety clack.
- "//" before a line is neat - it means "chat on the last channel I just sent a message on". So "/0" followed by any number of "//" messages results in the same behavior as above.
Regardless - why must the SL user learn this stuff to have a simple conversation? Why must all concert goers become channel management experts?
Following is the continuation of the above quoted IM chat with Mallow. I really need to learn how to use this Jira thing so I can cast my vote for the "give us tools to fix the typing sound problem".
Dolmere Talamasca: the slash makes my stomach turn. conditioning newbs like Pavlov's dog to use the chat system, in a way it was not really designed, to work around a FLAW in the system that should have been fixed years ago. years.
Mallow Niven: The typing sound, do ya mean?
Dolmere Talamasca: when LL split music audio from sound effects in the client I considered the issue fixed. You'd just mute sound effects at live shows, nuff said. They can go so much further with client development but the system now allows those who are bothered by the sound to turn it the f off. Just stop conditioning humans!
Dolmere Talamasca: the slash is used at live shows to suppress the typing sound
Dolmere Talamasca: instead of just muting the darned client
Mallow Niven: I forget I can do that...possibly I'm not the only one
Dolmere Talamasca: I remind ppl of it all the time
Mallow Niven: I missed that, probably
Dolmere Talamasca: and then the real argument starts. "But I like hearing the waves, the gulls," [the you name its]
Dolmere Talamasca: umm... if you LIKE the sound effects then you OPTED to hear the typing. :)
Mallow Niven: Yes... I like the sound effects... but can turn them off for music, yes?
Dolmere Talamasca: yes, you can
Dolmere Talamasca: and I know most artists do NOT like the sound effects along with the show - waves and other things are not a part of their music and audience participation/sim participation is not a part of the experience for original art
Mallow Niven: So... one should just do that during music, and dispense with the silly slashing, is that the point?
Dolmere Talamasca: that is my point, yes (it's why I wear my 'Anti "/" in Chat" tag)
Dolmere Talamasca: Control-p, audio & video tab, turn sound effects down to nothing. Then YOU, your client, hears no excess noise - just the audio stream
Dolmere Talamasca: When you go hang with friends outside of live music reverse that
Dolmere Talamasca: Much, much, much better than haranguing everyone who walks in the door to learn a new system of communication
Mallow Niven: Nods, one can turn it up/down/off in preferences, also
Dolmere Talamasca: Yes, now what we need (blog entry in draft form on this) is the option for LAND OWNERS to be able to mute sound effects. So at the beginning of a live show they just mute EVERYONE's sounds excpet music + video. At the end they can turn it back on.
Mallow Niven: Oh yes... that would work and be much easier than all the haranguing
Dolmere Talamasca: I agree
Dolmere Talamasca: I've been kicked out of places for not using "/", if you think about that - the mind boggles
Mallow Niven: Jeez... that's extreme
Dolmere Talamasca: Makes me militant and hostile on the subject
Mallow Niven: I can see why
Dolmere Talamasca: May I quote you on this? This chat would be a good example of this type of conversation for my upcoming blog entry on the topic
Mallow Niven: Yes, you may... as long as you don'tmake me sound dumber than I am, lol
Dolmere Talamasca: that would be a feat
Dolmere Talamasca: ba dump bump
Sunday Show
I doubt anyone has actually read this far but for the 2 or 3 that might have:
I've booked a show for this Sunday July 8th at 4pm SLT on Edloe Island. More details will follow in a separate blog post and in-world group notification when I have them.

Torley posts how to report bugs better. I could use this.

Torley also put something in the client menu tutorial, that should help your quest for a / free chat - you can turn off the whole stupid thing with a setting available there. No sound /and/ no typing anim.

Kaklick, it would be wonderful if clubs started encouraging users to change their client menu settings instead of using "/" characters. However, it's not a solution to the problem since it only affects your client. It also suppresses all typing based tools such as keyboards and typing overrides like the ones I use for fun and alternate typing appearance.
Weak Pro: suppress the typing animation, that I NEVER hear anyway, for myself only.
Strong Con: Suppress the typing animation and therefore all scripts that trigger off of its presence.
Maybe if it were similar to Bug VWR-353 the typing override debug menu option could be promoted out to say the tools menu or something. THEN it would be very viable as a workaround since new and old users alike are just one menu option away from freedom. (This still would not solve the lack of trigger for scripts though)
I've covered this before here in this entry: Dolmere Talamasca - Second Life "resident": Jacek Discovers Gold
From that article: "My particular wish is not answered here. As I said to Coal when she first brought this to my attention - this cool tweak does the opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish. I want to suppress my own typing animation and my own typing sounds for everyone else's viewers."

To quote: Jacek Antonelli: If you never ever want to hear the typing sound, you can go to Debug Settings, and set "UISndTyping" to blank
