QUICKIE GUIDE TO THE SIXTY ONE !
(Jan 15, 08)
Greetings new music Newbie!
Welcome to the most amazing new music buffet on the planet. The servings are all no limit, and the hot table just keeps growing. Until there is a listener bio/info feature, I'll try to keep this guide near the top of my posts. Almost every one that you encounter on t61 is happy to answer any question if they know the answer. Don' be afraid to ask. The rules for scoring aren't posted because they are always being tweeked as the site rapidly grows.
My own taste is very broad, and includes Rock, Alternative, Acoustic, Electronic, Dance, Instrumental, Classical, Blues, Jazz, Pop, Ambient and occasionally even some Country, Bluegrass and Heavy Metal. Great music is great music, period. Feel free to subscribe and unsubscribe at any time to anyone on the 61, or to point your referrals to this guide, as it'll help you both. I'll be happy to take suggestions for additions to this post.
SITE OVERVIEW: The 61 is a unique new site that is kind of 1/4 myspace interaction, 1/4 radio programming, 1/4 A&R; Label new music evaluation, and 1/4 musical stock market futures game with points. For new music junkies and sharks like myself, it is very addictive. We'd all buy stock if we could. It is the perfect marriage of two user content supplied groups: new bands with new music, and astute listeners supplying eager ears hungry for the the best of the latest indie offerings. WOW.
UPLOADED: That's when a band enters a song into the 61 system.
DISCOVERED BY: That's the first listener to bump (or vote) on a song in the general Browse pages, almost always from the Browse>Newest file.
THE RACK: The random scroll of 3 songs from the Browse pages that only move forward, but where you can earn 1 point for each listen. It got me off zero many times early on.
POSTED ON: The time/date a song moves from the Browse>Newest pages and "posts" onto the NEW and/or HOT front page listing. The NEW is chronological, and HOT is by speed of recent votes. Real hot songs post up on both, rather than just moving from the NEW to the HOT.
REVIVE: After a song goes "cold" from lack of enough new continual interest, it can be revived with a jolt of 1,000 votes, which sends it to the top of the NEW front page list, and is treated like a regular new song. I'm told there is a 1 per day limit.
RE-REVIVE: I'm told by both dalryaug and AnnieB this has occurred and there is no limit yet found on multi-reviving on one song. The revive banner stays red.
DAILY LOG-IN Bonus: 20 points for checking in to the 61.
TUNEBOX: The internal message system. You must include a song when using it. Click on an incoming tunebox, and the song is put in the main player, which you must start to hear. You can disable the email notice. Note: Bands can't tunebox you, unless they have set up a seperate listener account.
COMMENT WALL: Where you can leave a message for an artist or listener on his home page. You can't erase it once it is on their wall, including fix typos. Can be embarrassing if late at night or used when under the influence.
COMMENT: Where you can leave your own comment (and read others) on any individual song. You can fix a typo by reposting a new one, and deleting the old. Copy, Paste, fix, and delete old is the quickest way. You can delete any of your own song COMMENTS at any time.
SUBSCRIPTIONS. Listeners who you follow to watch what they discover and comment or add to their main playlist or personal playlists. To subscribe to someone, click on them and go to their home profile page. there is s subscribe button which turns into an unsubscribe button when you are already a subscriber. They only show up to you on your Profile page.
SUBSCRIBERS: People who want to follow what you do and find.
PROFILE PHOTO: the graphic that is used to represent you, like a digital face. Make it memorable, personal, and recognizable when very small.
SECRET FORMULA: That's the undisclosed logarithm that decides which song moves from the browse pages to the NEW and HOT home page.
SECRET INGREDIENT: That's what makes this an addictive site sure to go nuclear. It is different for different people, but for me, its finding the newest of the newest of new music, and being able to give great feedback and encouragement to deserving artists early in their career and share in their future success.
LEVELS: Strata of your increasing point wielding power. You earn your way into a level, but once there never fall below it. You are allowed to bump a song only up to your level, and never more. If you up your level from gained points, you can always go back and re-bump favorite songs.
REFERRAL: How you can invite others to join, or how you were possibly invited, which automatically cross subscribes you together. You also get referral points, and points when they gain points and move up in levels. Having them subscribe keeps them from getting lost in the shuffle.
POINTS: This is the currency you accumulate by picking and BUMPing good music that others will bump after you. Stick to great tunes, early or not, as they'll always get new bumps.
BUMP COST SLIDING SCALE: The less bumps a new song has the more points it costs you to bump, however, there is an exponential greater return on those early bumps IF it is a hit.. Kind of like high-risk / high-interest investments. Think sub-prime, too.
PERSONALIZED PLAYLISTS: Folders of songs you drag songs into to create custom playlists, and to make room on your main playlist when it gets full.
RADIO: How to hear your own programming minus crass commercials! Annie the Queen Bee says listeners can tune in to other user's customized radio, or play their own. The RADIO has randomized songs that are tracks added to a user's individualized playlist , which is perfect if you are too lazy to make your own and find another listener with similar tastes. You can also be adventurous and listen to others with different tastes, especially if they are points leaders. You can, of course, listen to just your own picks that you already chose by clicking on the ADD button on songs you liked when they played in the main player. The controls for the RADIO are far upper right, just like for the RACK.
???????: The hidden stealth mode of a just uploaded tune which last for an hour and obscures name and artist.
COVERED BY: This means it is not an original song by this artist, but is a remake of someone else's work previously released. Putting your pointer over the song title, will tell you the original artist on a new box.
COVERED BY: A few artist's are able to list on their home page the graphics of other artist's on the 61 who have recorded (covered) their original works.
LYRICS: A much requested feature, which was solved by noctaluca by posting them in their bio box.
SHARK: Listener hungry for the newest of the new, who circles on the newest page.
ANGEL: Someone who tuneboxes you before they bump a song.
SLEEPER: A great song that has been overlooked with few bumps.
ZOOMER. A song moving up quickly.
FORUMS: Link at the bottom of the page where you can rant and rave.
FAQS: Link at the bottom of the page of periodically posed ponderables.
SAM and JAMES. The two geniuses that put this together for us all. Give them your love and a donation if you can.
Hey, be nice and be positive. Life is too short not to be. Don't leave neg comments unless you can do better, and can post it.
Enjoy, make and share both great peace and great music.
