Howto Relaycast (For Windows Users)
What Is Relaycasting? | Howto Relaycast (Mac OS X) | Howto Relaycast (Winblows)
Since I have not really had to touch the Windows OS since about Y2K I cannot tell you how to setup your Windows PC thingie for relaycasting. Instead I have some information volunteered by fellow SL musician Raspbury Rearwin.
[BEGIN RASP INSTRUCTIONS]
This should work for most people. Some soundcards do not allow this option, in which case, they'd need a way to get the sound from their computer to mix with their live stuff. Either a cable from the computer or the best way is if you have two computers. one to capture the incoming stream, and one to broadcast.
Go to Properties
![]()
Tick "Recording"
Make sure you have Stereo mix and line checked as well as anything else, but you NEED to have Stereo mix checked. Sometimes it will say "What you hear" instead of Stereo mix.

Select the Stereo Mix slider (or what you hear)
![]()
Now what you broadcast will be a mix of every sound your computer makes, so you'll want to turn off your sounds in SL both the regular ones and the UI sounds. This [screen shot] is from the newest version of SL['s controls]
![]()
You can use windows media player or winamp [(or iTunes :)] to get the first person's stream by playing URL and put in the URL details for the stream.
![]()
Best to put your headphones on the Computer to hear everything and to keep your mic from feeding back. Control the first stream volume from Win amp or WMP [(or iTunes :)] and you should be good to go.
[END RASP'S INSTRUCTIONS]
The conversation leading up to Raspbury sending me the above information went something like this:
(Paraphrasing - Me: Cyl helped Mimi put together a solution that routed her computer's sound through her physical mixing board. The one that her guitar and microphone are plugged in to)
Raspbury Rearwin: but for some reason Mimi's system did not like that
Raspbury Rearwin: so what we did
Raspbury Rearwin: I had her change the sound settings on her computer
Raspbury Rearwin: to do that
Raspbury Rearwin: she had to go into the sound mixer for her computer
Raspbury Rearwin: under options
Raspbury Rearwin: Properties
Raspbury Rearwin: and tick the Recording options button
Raspbury Rearwin: and make sure that they have the "stereo mix" option for recording source
Raspbury Rearwin: then they SELECT that as the recording source
Raspbury Rearwin: click OK
Raspbury Rearwin: they then need to make sure that MIC is muted
Raspbury Rearwin: if they have speakers
Raspbury Rearwin: otherwise it will feedback
Raspbury Rearwin: but then they can still just grab the first stream in winamp
Raspbury Rearwin: and play along normal from their setup
Raspbury Rearwin: (line in usually)
Raspbury Rearwin: and they can control the volume of the first stream from winamp
You: will you help me build a windows tutorial on relatcasting for my blog then? screenshots?
You: I would make a mac equiv
You: and post them both
You: for posterity
Jonathan Yap: That's a great idea
Raspbury Rearwin: yeah sure
Raspbury Rearwin: I don't have vista though
Raspbury Rearwin: but it's basically the same idea
Raspbury Rearwin: just make sure that the last person in the chain turns off SL sounds and the UI sounds as well
You: well, the receiver, right
You: was planning on mentioning that
Raspbury Rearwin: right
You: showing a screenie of the volume sliders in preferences
I wanted to include that conversation because the paraphrased lead in talks about an alternate way of configuring your computer (Windows OR Mac actually) for relaying. Cylindrian Rutabaga helped Mimi out with this the first time we got her setup.
[BEGIN CYL'S INSTRUCTION ON RELAYCAST SETUP]
Cylindrian Rutabaga: 1. Connect a cable from your Line Out (headphones) into an open channel on your Mixer
Cylindrian Rutabaga: this is to get the sound FROM your computer to your mixer... this is step one... not like usual
Cylindrian Rutabaga: 2. Open iTunes or whatever program you use to listen to music
Mimi Carpenter: ok Winamp or Media player for me
Cylindrian Rutabaga: you have to be able to hear [the originator of the relay]
Cylindrian Rutabaga: 3. Put [the originator's] Stream URL in your media player
Cylindrian Rutabaga: you should be able to hear [the remote stream] in your mixer
Cylindrian Rutabaga: what I use is a cable that is stereo on one end which goes into the mixer and a small 1/8" plug which goes into the headphone jack on my computer
Cylindrian Rutabaga: [plug the in to the mixer] on a channel that is open, doesn't matter [which] as long as its not taking up your mic or your guitar
Cylindrian Rutabaga: headphones [you] should be able to [plug] in your mixer [for moitoring]
Cylindrian Rutabaga: [and] the rest of the process, Mimi, is the same broadcasting as you always do
[END CYL'S INSTRUCTIONS ON RELAYCAST SETUP]
Note that Cyl's instructions could also apply to how you'd use two computers with the cable from the headphones going to your audio mixer.
