Different-yet-the-same continued - Pitta
While I was on my wonderful vacation in Great Britain I got the wild idea to pick up a little notebook. I used it to jot down things that I found of interest. You know - turns of phrase, colloquialisms, verbal oddities and other things that made me raise an eyebrow.
"Pitta bread"
________________________________
"Pitta bread" - spelled pitta and pronounced pit-tah, not pita pronounced pee-tah as it is here in the US.
Like "Fillet of fish" this one is a pretty minor one that I just could not help but make note of! It's the alternate spelling to go along with the alternate pronunciation that gets me I think.
