Different-yet-the-same continued - Manky

While I was on my wonderful vacation in Great Britain I got the wild idea to pick up a little notebook. I used it to jot down things that I found of interest. You know - turns of phrase, colloquialisms, verbal oddities. Things that made me go hmmmm really.

Different-yet-the-same - munch

While I was on my wonderful vacation to England I got the wild idea to pick up a little notebook. I used it to jot down things that I found interesting. Turns of phrase, colloquialisms, verbal oddities.

Some, in hindsight, were more a product of my being immersed in something so overwhelmingly different-yet-the-same. Some are... well... I'll try to get around to posting some here, shall I?

The SixtyOnes - I Missed Them!

Here is the first tidbit about my recent vacation to be posted on this blog. It's been a while decompressing from the trip and it didn't help that I went straight back to work at the same breakneck schedule.

One fine night while making my way around the suburbs of London I came across this live show:

Unfortunately by the time I got to the counter to pay my entrace fee they were already on like the third band of the evening and I had missed the awesomely named act "The SixtyOnes"!

Comments

I know that SOME people do read my blog. There are also some people who post comments on little missives here and there. I was just thinking how Vint Falken's blog hit a milestone recently of like 5,000 comments - I'm pretty sure that's what she celebrated for a day or two. I realize that my babbling content and her social commentary are not on par, but I've been around quite a bit longer and I'm only just pushing 700 comments on this blog.

What does that say?
Do I not do a good enough job of making the blog feel interactive?
Am I really posting content as meaningless and self serving as it feels at times?
Probably.

Boggling

BlogHUD post ' Boggled mind - asking, "what, why, how???" ' WOOT - Crap's clocktower succeeds at boggling the mind! Well done, Mr. Mariner!

Speaking of boggling minds - my friend Feline Slade was nice enough (she rocks!) to grab a quote for me at a recent basstastic perversion show.

Feline says:

"As requested at Merry Pranksters....

[16:09] Alter Humphreys: I'm slightly disturbed"

WOOT - one boggled mind and one slightly disturbed concert goer! Are we on a roll here or what?

Church Sign

Recently I was driving around and took note of a sign on a church. You know the type - those block letter marquees that get changed to include some scripture snippet or smarmy comment.

The sign read: "The bible is bread for every day, not cake for special occasions."

I could not help but immediately think: "Proud to be carb free."

Laughing Out Loud, Again

OK - this IM conversation had me rolling:

[18:48] Matthew Schneidermann: I watch your girl Mimi today doing a concert
[18:48] Dolmere Talamasca: haha :)
[18:48] Dolmere Talamasca: "my girl mimi" I'm telling her you said that
[18:48] Matthew Schneidermann: by all means :D
[18:48] Dolmere Talamasca: was that your first SL live show? what did you think of my girl?
[18:48] Matthew Schneidermann: we chatted a bit. She's cool people
[18:49] Dolmere Talamasca: supercool.
[18:49] Matthew Schneidermann: "your girl" has a very nice voice. I dig her
[18:49] Matthew Schneidermann: You're not french too, are you?
[18:50] Dolmere Talamasca: Ah, if only I lived closer to my mimi
[18:50] Matthew Schneidermann: heh
[18:50] Dolmere Talamasca: no, I'm in the northeast US - further north than you
[18:51] Matthew Schneidermann: You know how noth I am?
[18:51] Matthew Schneidermann: oooo, stalker material :D
[18:52] Dolmere Talamasca: you posted your freaking bio in your profile like a good little myspace kiddie
[18:53] Dolmere Talamasca: Hi, I'm a male, I love long walks on short piers, I prefer to be the one that does the dumping, and I only drink when I'm feeling like a drink.
[18:53] Dolmere Talamasca: I'm looking for a girl that likes to ride horses while I'm watching sports and talks to herself so I can concentrate on other shit than hearing her inane babble.
[18:54] Matthew Schneidermann: lol. now I know all abut you and Mimi
[18:54] Dolmere Talamasca: you may tell her that
[18:55] Dolmere Talamasca: may I post this conversation snippet on my blog? I'm laughing out loud over here.
[18:55] Matthew Schneidermann: lol go right ahaead
[18:55] Matthew Schneidermann: i mean, a head
[18:56] Matthew Schneidermann: like my floating head

Quotes Out Of Context

JueL left this comment on my thesixtyone.com profile the other day
"Great Set the other night, something about you on that bass, some of that stuff DAMN GOOD gets to me in that Sweet creepy way....I just love ya Mon :)"

I am terribly amused by "in that Sweet creepy way." I wonder if I should change this blog's tagline to that? :)

Another one that had me rolling was a comment that showed up in open chat during a MaxMiDol relaycast show. I cannot remember which of Max's rabid fans said it but the comment nearly made me lose my place in the song, and the subsequent songs as I giggled quietly to myself through the set. It went something like "I know I'm going to regret saying this but Dolmere ROCKS!"

Haha!
See ya in-world!

Snapzilla

I found some snapshots of me over at Snapzilla.com that I had either never seen or forgotten about.

Snapzilla - Snapshots from Second Life Here I am with Reina quine and a group of friends on the plot of land that she had bought and customized. She describes it as "Dancing with Dolmere while Patience drowns in the hot tub, with Mera, Semaj, Allie, Panthar, Jensel, Shaunny, and Benwin looking on in horror."

and anothe fun one from Reina is Snapzilla - Snapshots from Second Life described as "I am finally paler than even Dolmere." This one was flagged as a "editor's choice - best of snapzilla" picture. Well done, Reina Q! I'm pretty sure this was before I had gotten a custom moddable version of the prim skeleton from YadNi. I'm still eagerly awaiting a sculpty version of it. Should the day come that he releases one I'll be lined up outside the shop and I'll likely wear it for months on end without taking it off even to wash.

Jojamela Soon posted some pics on snapzilla of Max, Mimi and I at the MaxMiDol show we did at SoHo a while back (same as Chestnut blogged about in the quick link above.) She incorrectly implies that the tech used was the open source NINJAM tool instead of relaycasting but that's OK. If I bothered to create an account on websites like snapzilla I'd leave a comment on the picture linking to the two different techs.

Snapzilla - Snapshots from Second Life I was asked to move closer to make it easier to take pictures. I understand the request and it is nice to see pics of us all jammed together playing on the same stage - but a lot of these stages are HUGE and just so tempting to spread out on.

Oh yeah, Vint posted this one on Flickr: Dolmere Talamasca and Greenies at SLRFL on Flickr - Photo Sharing!. Who knew that there were greenies chilling on the catwalks above the stage while I was playing my basstastic perversions for the gathered group? :) Maybe Harold knew too!?

King Phil Makes Room

Changing my Job - Official Second Life Blog

Reuters/Second Life - EXCLUSIVE - Rosedale to step down as Linden Lab CEO

Stuart Warf just shared this info with me in-world.

Phil Rosedale is going to move to a chairman of the board position and LL will being searching out a new CEO for the company. They're looking for someone with operational and management expertise than Phil brings to the table while he takes a role as the chair of the board to continue making "contributions to vision, strategy, and design."

Hmmm... it's not really all that bad a move.

Mitch Kapor, current chairman of the board of LL, will "will remain a board member and the company’s largest investor".

The Podmafia folks will be having a live podcast taping at 7PM SLT tonight

Talkshoe Live

I will not be able to participate in this discussion as I'll be streaming my music live at The Merry Pranksters at 7PM SLT, followed by Max Kleene at 8PM SLT. (Will we do some special treat relaying in the middle? Your guess... mine... equal value.)

Here's a SLURL to Pranksters in case you decide to come on by and hear some basstastically perverted music.

Hope's got a lot of explaining to do... (What Is This Crap?) HAHAHAHAHAAaaaaa this is so frikkin funny. This IS why I get along with Crap Mariner so much, hahaaa. I did something like this IRL once - a manager of mine went on vacation and made the mistake of leaving me the key to his office. When he came back his office was a crime scene complete with a door wrapped in police tape, masking tape chalk outlines and table tent evidence numbers. It went over VERY well.

Max Bump Thing

OK, I have to post this before I let it eat me up.

I'm honestly annoyed by this site: Max Bumps - The Sixty One Fan Blog

The ironies are thick.

It's annoyed me the past two days. It's so unlike me to be bothered by something so childish but this stung me for whatever reason. I had built out a big huge blog post ranting and raving. Before posting I talked to Crap Mariner, someone who is not afraid to rant, and would you believe that the person I expected to have my back talked me down instead? He said the things that I normally would think in this situation, he said the things that I would have told a friend struggling with the same feelings.

I'll just post the link to the site and be done with it. Time to move on back to the positive, fun, energized thoughts that my involvement with the61 has brought so far.

Can You Spot The Prim?

Crap Mariner had mentioned that I could have a little corner of the Clocktower to post a few prims if I wanted. I considered using the build to post some backup SLX vendors but decided against it - I already have a few out and there's no need to add vendor scripts to that sim.

Instead I was inspired by a blog post that Crap had posted. I asked if it was still OK to post a prim and got the go.

Can you spot the prim I added?

Recent Sl Activity

Crap Mainer contacted me that he'd put together a little gift for musicians who have played at the clocktower venue.

Gears (What Is This Crap?)

Since I do not really own land, well my 16x16 parcel is packed to my 3 prim limit, I decided to wear it. I didn't take any captures of my first attempt at wearing it, but it was quite amusing. It was a rather large object that I chose to wear like a halo of sorts. I went walking around the clocktower and then Edloe and neighboring islands for a while with it obscuring my view. I considered leaving it like that for a week or so but I really could not see anything in front of me - just the back of my head / the gear.

So after quite a bit of tinkering this is what I came up with:

DolAccessory1.jpg

DolAccessory2.jpg

I might also note that Grateful Stryker did something similar for my appearances over at The Merry Pranksters. He created a plaque with my name on it for their wall of fame-of-sorts and sent me a copy of it.

Before receiving my ever rotating gift of goodness I was invited to stop by the clocktower and act as an avaprop for Duckyfresh Watanabe's latest taping of That S'Life. Jp Brennan joined me and we sat around adding mystique to the set.

Playing That S'Life :: 24Jan08 | SLCN

I've not really seen many of these. It's a good format, I especially like the highlight on upcoming music shows with a brief bio for the musician or plug for the venue, etc. It was fun being an avaprop again - I'm enjoying it.

Oh, and after the taping some of us ran over to see Stuart Warf topple some prims on the Havok 4 sim. Jack Pitts got at least one screen shot of it in progress: BlogHUD : Holy Prims Batman. I've been remiss in taking screen grabs lately, sorry.

The amusing thing was that with 600 or so prims making up the tower Havok 4 / the sim had issues keeping up. The crash was fun to watch but the floating prims that never quite crashed to simma firma were even more fun to observe.

Weak joke - Mainstream Press

This post was written to support a rather weak joke. Feel free to skip it if you'd like as it contains several inaccuracies in order to support the joke. The real story is back here: http://www.lovelymachine.com/Dolmere/2008/01/mainestream_press.html

One thing I learned from listening to Grace/Cyl being interviewed by her CBS friends: SL Musicians really need to learn the art of spin.

First, JueL made a point that is of course correct - this was a great opportunity for Grace/Cyl and not something to be scoffed at. My comments while we were at Artropolis and my comments here on this blog entry were/are not intended to cast a negative shadow on a cool thing. Quite the contrary - it's awesome that the local news team decided to cover the story at all.

However, there are some things we might want to keep in mind when dealing with the press. With rare exception they will attempt to sensationalize if possible, they will not do their own research before hand, and they will take comments out of context where possible.

Mainestream Press

Calling all builders, businesspeople and budding fashionistas….educators, entertainers, and more… - Official Linden Blog. The Lindens are once again asking folks to place their information on file so that they can match lucky contestants with press requests looking for particular angles on stories.

Dedric Mauriac responded with his info: BlogHUD : Volunteering for the media

Speaking of the press and Second Life residents: Cylindrian let us know that a local news reporter was coming by her place to interview her about her use of SL. Diligent little hive minds that we are, a bunch o' her friends and mine teleported over to her home in Artroplis to provide avatar-props for the interview.

CylJueL1.jpg

Supposedly the interview will be posted to the CBS affiliate's website so that we can all watch. When/if I get a link to it I'll post it here. That is, if it ever actually gets posted.

I had a whole blog entry written about what I overheard as she was interview. The whole thing is written around a rather weak joke. I'll post it later. In the meantime I actually heard some news after the fact which is more interesting and more serious so I thought I would get to that first then move on to my big leadup to my silly joke.

Claudia Mantis clued me in to the fact that Cyl had heard back from the reporter that came out to interview her. It turns out that the reporter's producer says, although they love the positive feel-good story... they want Michelle, the reporter, to dig up some negative stories to tell to offset Cylindrian's positive message.

Says Cylindrian: "she's really upset about it... as am I"

In hindsight Cylindrian feels that "it was a GREAT interview," and that "y'know, focusing on the positive."

Personally I think it's a bit amusing that my 1/2 written blog post about the event was slamming the reporter. I tried to include tempered messaging to make it clear that the reporter seemed to have good intentions though. I'll go ahead post it without any major edits so as not to ruin the punch line.

I was probably targeting the wrong person when ranting about negative questions as it seems that it was her producer who wants the negative angle. I agree with Cylindrian when she says "it just makes me sad that good doesn't provide ratings." After all, it's the constant negativity and narrow focus of reporting on SL that drives us nuts, right?

Cyl says that if all the reporters hear is negative stuff about SL then that's what they're going to ask about. I think that's a self fulfilling prophecy and a rathole. There are some reporters that have managed to get entirely positive articles about individuals using SL past their negative-enforcement-team.

"She was a sweet lady, she came to my house to learn" said Cyl "all she wanted to do was learn from someone who was a success, and learn about the community... that it's more than a 'game'". I'll note here that Michelle found Cylindrian via Linden Lab's press department - so there's another comment in the next post that you can take with a boulder or two salt.

Speaking of her own involvement with Second Life Cyl says that "a lot of good has come out of it and [Michelle's] eyes were opened to that"

Congratulations to Cyl for representing SL musicians in a nice positive light!

No Home? Explore.

My current home location is a pretty busy sim. Often I'll get crashed out of SL because the sim is restarting or when I try to login I'll be transported to a random location because the sim is currently down.

When home crashes and I'm logged in elsewhere an opportunity presents itself. Explore a new area!

The most recent misfire sent me to this sim/area:

I decided to walk around and explore a little and this "used car lot" and entering/leaving sign was enough to make me take a screenshot (that's right, Vint and Jacek, I said screenshot).

Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe (Part 2)

There is one more thing I wanted to share about my visit to Jay and Frogg's place. They surprised me.

They both have VERY distinctive speaking voices. If you've ever been to one of their shows you've noticed that their voices are terribly unique. I was very curious if the distinctive voices were "faked". Intentional or not artists tend to "turn on" when they're in front of a microphone and their character can undergo a change, even sometimes drastically. I was really curious if their voices were a form of mask, a character creation used to perform.

In case you had that thought once or twice yourself I can tell you: they are using their day-to-day standard voices when bantering during their SL shows. Two full days with them in a relaxed atmosphere answered that question for me.

(Any of the hundreds of people who met them at SLCC are exempt from the above revelation.)

It was a very pleasant visit, an enjoyable stay, a fun meetup. Thank you guys!

December 29, 2007

Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe

I'd like to talk a bit about my visit to Jaycatt and Frogg's place of residence.

A while back I was on vacation and happened to be somewhat in the area of where Jay and Frogg live. They're roomies in a home that Jay owns. I asked in advance if they would mind some company when I hit their area. They were more than happy to work something out. We weren't sure if it would be meeting for coffee somewhere or if there would be enough time, not to mention a place that would accomodate it, for us to play some music together. Frogg owns a bass guitar so the worry of having some equipment to join in with was nullified, a nice touch.

Shortly before arriving my plans changed rather dramatically. It went from an afternoon to sit and chit chat (and maybe play a song or two if lucky) to something much better, imho. I was able to rearrange some of my trip and managed to spend a full two days with the guys! It was such a fun and special treat. We had a few lunches and a few dinners together, shared stories, and played lots of music.

I was there on a Friday and the guys were kind enough to allow me to "sit in" on one of their regularly scheduled Friday night shows. Have I mentioned that it was a lot of fun? They were fun to "jam" with because they are both very easy going. There was no pressure, no reprimands for mistakes made, no worries about repeating parts. It was a wonderful learning experience on top of being immense fun. Major bonus? I have rehearsed some of ther tunes with them in the keys that they play them in so I now can play along at home when I attend an EffinJ show! WOOT!

We had one "rehearsal" which lasted a few hours on Thursday. I did get to take time to practice the songs after we worked on them together. For such limited time working together I managed to play on about 8 of their 24 song Friday night set. I'm not ashamed to admit that I consider this a huge accomplishment in my book. Remember that I'm a hobbyist. I was impressed with myself for basically learning some songs overnight and playing them somewhat close to nearly what they should have been the next day.

Jaycatt Nico

This entry is more or less a reference to these entries: Jaycatt Nico's Ramblings: Dreaming of the future :) and Jaycatt Nico's Ramblings: Holiday plans.

Jaycatt is pretty open about who he is and what happens in his life when he posts to his blog (linked above). His readers will note that a friendship he was so pleased about has turned into something more.

From an outsider looking in it seems to me that Jay has grown an awful lot as a person these past few years. He's playing music again after taking time away from keys, he's played live in front of an audience, he's made a ton of new friends, and he's now found himself a partner to share the good and the bad times with.

Congratulations to Jaycatt for his budding romance, for finding someone to appreciate, for putting himself out there, and for the big life change that is sure to come by inviting someone to share a home and a life together.

This is sad to read. It's evident that WindLight, Havok 4 and Voice are being developed independently now, which is a nice thing. However, I'm just sad that there's even more development going into Voice, a feature I still don't see a need for.

Yxes Fans Rejoice!

The Secondlife Newspaper PEOPLE: Renaissance Woman of SL Audio and Video

Fans of Yxes Delacroix can rejoice for an interview about her has been posted over at the Second Life Newspaper blog. I've not heard of this blog before. The interviewer, Dana somethingorother, purports to be a fan of Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe. Tonight Live is the weekly talk show formatted podcast hosted by Paisley and produced by Yxes.

Many of you will know Yxes from any of her dozens of other projects that she attacks and manages as professionally as her involvement with Tonight Live. Perhaps you've seen her as the hostess at the Los Arboles open mic night Monday nights along with host Rich Desoto. Perhaps you know her as the chipper, witty concert goer who dances the night away appreciating the myriad offerings of live music that SL has to offer. Now you have a chance to learn more about her starting with this article, which appears to be the first in a series of postings.

Have fun!

Jacek Posts Aspect Ratios

Jacek Lives - Blog Archive - Jacek’s Guide to Aspect Ratios. Once again Jacek comes through with some really useful information.

"This should help anyone who wants to make images to be displayed in the SL (classifieds, picks, etc.) and not have them be horribly stretched or squashed by Linden Lab’s inconsistent use of image aspect ratios."

Under Attack

When I logged in this AM I found that Swinside was under attack from the green blobby slim goo things. This was another of the Bill Cosby sign boards attempting to animate your avatar repeatedly. Every time I attempted to TP somewhere else the client would crash. Fun!

Tiny Empires

Cylindrian Rutabaga has gotten me addicted to a game-within-a-game called Tiny Empires. It's a neat idea. You wear a HUD with all the game controls. It's designed to be attached pretty much all the time. It's turn based and with each turn new "offers" are presented to you which you can interact with or ignore as time allows. Each turn you have the HUD attached increases your in-game "wealth".

Learn more at the Tiny Empires blog: Tiny Empires Blog.

The game is setup to operate kind of like a feudal heirarchy system. As you acquire wealth and holdings in the game you are rewarded with title increases, etc. You find a liege to work with and eventually acquire subjects to work with you.

If anyone out there has not heard of it and would like to try:
1) There are trial HUDs available which will give you exposure to the game before spending the tiny 399L cost to buy the full verison. Contact me in-world for a copy if you'd like.
2) I'm in need of subjects! If you'd like to try the game and heard about it here please consider contacting me so that you can join my fine line of SL live music players. :)

I'm sure some fellow bloggers are already actively playing. If, by chance, you're not or you are and wish to join our ranks - I Iook forward to hearing from you in SL!

Satan's Kingdom

Here's another little batch of images from the other virtual world I have an account in. These pictures are of a park in north-western Connecticut. I've passed it a few times on work trips and just had to stop to take a picture.

Satans_Kingdom.JPG

The entrance to this park is full of signage like "park closes at dusk" and "Welcome, this is an alcohol free facility", "keep right", "all dogs must be on a leash", etc, etc. Who knew there were so many rules in Hell? That's gonna piss a lot of people off!

More West Coast Tripping

Here are a few more pictures from my recent trip to the west coast of my troubled country. While there I took a trip from northern California up into Oregon. These pictures represent that portion of my trip.

Live_Or_In_Person.JPG

Shouldn't this sign read "In Person"? Milli Vannili is appearing in this small little town of Orick in northern California - and they advertise it as "Live"? :) Haha, this picture was just begging to be taken.

Oregon_Coastline.JPG

The coast of Oregon is simply gorgeous. I got quite a few pictures and truly enjoyed every moment of this trip.

While visiting the west coast, as some of you may know, I took the opportunity to stop by and visit a few of my SL friends - a certain frog and a certain cat. Jay and Frogg are such great people. I was so pleased to have had a chance to meet them and even to have been able to play music together. Heck, Jay even burned me a CD to take home with me of our time playing notes in unison.

So. Pleased. Happy. Skelly.

Folks, a beautiful little bird with a smooth singing voice recently dropped by Swinside and dropped a note at my feet. I read the note and decided the information contained therein was important enough to share with you posthaste. After rearranging the words a tiny bit and removing the profanity (involving a general distaste towards the volume of my speakers and saying something about turning it the *@$% down) I have posted it here for your interest.

Sunny California Once Again

Perhaps you remember a trip I took to the wonderful land of the San Francisco. It was a working/vacation that I took this past summer to the west coast of our United States. I told you about it and I posted some pictures about it too.

Included in those pictures were some shots I took from a low flying small airplane I was lucky enough to get a ride in. At the time it was a foggy day. While I got great pictures and had a ball you'll note that the pics of the Golden Gate from above are a bit hard to make out. Here for your pleasure are more pictures from my most recent west coast trip.

What's better than pictures of the gate from above? Pictures of the gate from above on a clear day!

Claudia Mantis Opens "The Esplanade"

Claudia Mantis is opening her shopping area officially in a few days - September 28th. The musical lineup that day is second to none with Freestar Tammas, Cylindrian Rutabaga, JueL Resistance and Charles Coleman. You simply must attend if possible :)

Claudia Mantis: The Esplanade: Grand Opening

Also, as an aside in an otherwise normal posting, I'm getting a real kick out of the verbal sparring that Vint Falken and Prokofy Neva (read: Benjamin Duranske vs. Catherine Fitzpatrick) I'd say it never would have happened if she'd just joined my elite group of blogs that officially ban that flame bait hater from their comments section. Instead she's learning her lesson the hard way including having to try to be polite and merely visually hide Catherine Fitzpatrick's hateful personal attacks in comments.

An Ode To The New Second Life Communicate Window

An Ode To The New Second Life Communicate Window

New Second Life Communicate window
You suck

Oh, Communicate window from the depths
of a hellish San Francisco factory
You suck

You waste screen space
and annoy me with your presence
You suck

Window spawned in the brains of evil beings
You suck

You hide details
and hinder my ability to
Communicate window
You suck

Like separate, slimmer versions of
Crappy Communicate windows
you forget your preferred position constantly

EVE Comes to Mac + Linux

Before there was SL for me there was Star Wars Galaxies. When I saw that there was going to be an MMORPG based on Star Wars I went balistic and planned on buying in the moment it came out. Closer to its release I discovered that, like the later to be released game World of Warcraft, it would have a monthly subscription fee. I still wanted in. Surely it would be worth some time. Lastly I discovered it was a PC only game. I wanted out. I only use Macs and any game house that fails to create a Mac port fails to get my interest.

Even later I read that Star Wars Galaxies had jumped the shark. I never even got a chance to see what it was like at its peak.

Later another interesting looking MMORPG sprung up. It's called EVE Online. I considered taking a look at it but discovered that it was PC only. Forget EVE Online. Oh, but wait:

Eve Online for Mac and Linux operating systems | Amidala.be: insanity leads to poetry ... or just a weblog.

Now we're talking - a Mac AND a Linux port. Nice. Uh oh, nice except for one thing. This game is also on a paid monthly subscription model. It has a 30 day free trial so at some point I may consider checking it out, just for the heck of it, but I'm not about to pay a monthly fee for a game environment.

Survey popup + Events Griping

I recently had one of those survey popups on login. I planned on telling LL how my experience has been worse lately but the entry field would not take any text input. I had to settle for no description - useless. Oh well. One more new feature that doesn't quite work.

While we're at it - WOW - the SL events listings are a MESS! WOW.
Just take a look at it: http://secondlife.com/events/. Didn't they say they were going to do something about cleaning these listings up?

Look at these descriptions:
"PARTY, FREE MONEY & JOBS"
"Yardsale - Freebies Galore!"
"Yard sale free zyngo free gifts"
"SLINGO IS ROCKINNN! @ MAGANDA ISLAND RESORT!"
"LAND FOR SALE EXOTIC ISLANDS"
"YARD SALE FREE PUBLIC YARD SALE"
"**MEGA YARD SALE** POSEBALL DANCES KISSES CUDDLES XXX GEN..."
"BARGAINS..SALE..YARDSALE..FREE GIFTS"
"CUSTOM CLOTHES"
"Sex beds 299L each!"
"LAND FOR SALE- Ending Oceans Realty"
"***Having a Baby? Tell the World!***"
"Asia Thai design chloths shoes tatto buddah boat tuc-tuc ..."
"** GOUCHO SKIRTS BeauTie HEELS WEDDING SETS **"
It just goes on and on and on and on.

These event listings turn my stomach. I can't see how 90% of the crap filling up the schedule can be justified as an event. Am I the only one who feels this way? It gives me that "spam in my email" or "spam in my blog comments" feeling - it turns me off from looking for legit events to attend the few times I have spare moments to go check things out.

"PARTY, FREE MONEY & JOBS" is listed for just about every hour of the day as is "LAND FOR SALE EXOTIC ISLANDS". Nice.

Is Slingo still a casino style game of chance? Or is it more like Tetris or Bejeweled - a game for the sake of playing a game and passing the time?

Isn't there an entire land auction/sale area? Why would someone list land sales as events over and over again?

How is a yardsale (another word for store) an event? I've gone to these "events" before and found NO other people on the parcel - where is the "event" host?

How about "Custom clothes" or "Sex beds 299L each!"? That's an advertisement for a service, right? An event?? There's an entire classified section for things like service advertisements.

Responding To Some Vint-age

Vint Falken has a way of posting topics that either get people thinking or appeal to a social outrage. She's very opinionated and is not afraid to share her thoughts. The redeeming factor, ever present in her posts, is that she shares more than her thoughts on the matter - she shares her reasoning and usually includes some well researched materials in the piece as well.

She has posted two entries lately that caught my eye. They caught my eye because, unlike a lot of stuff that she comes up with, I disagree with her assessment in both cases.

Final Top Sites Post

Crap Mariner has signed up with the top site page. What Is This Crap? SL Topsites

Let's review the linkage since I started to track the top sites hits:

    July 11 - July 22nd
  • Outgoing clicks: 12
  • Incoming clicks: 0
    July 22 - August 1st
  • Outgoing clicks: 12
  • Incoming clicks: 1
    August 1st - August 8th
  • Outgoing clicks: 9
  • Incoming clicks: 8
    August 8th - August 18th
  • Outgoing clicks: 5
  • Incoming clicks: 10

The latest bit of information:

    August 18th - August 31st
  • Outgoing clicks: 12
  • Incoming clicks: 8

The numbers are still fair but low. I've decided that my listing on the top site page is about done. This has been an interesting experiment but it's time for it to end I think. I could not delete my account so instead I removed my account information (well, replaced with garbage that the form would accept) and then removed the top site button from my blog's templates.

An additional note: Richard has been busy and the page layout has changed once again. I liked the last one a bit more but this is still a nice clean look that minimizes advertising and maximizes listings.

More Open Sores

Official Linden Blog - Blog Archive More Open Source: Our Web Services Libraries

There are two web libraries that have been opened at this point - Eventlet and Mulib.

Eventlet - Second Life Wiki "Eventlet is a networking library written in Python. It achieves high scalability by using non-blocking io while at the same time retaining high programmer usability by using coroutines to make the non-blocking io operations appear blocking at the source code level." and "eventlet is the networking library used to implement the backbone architecture. Backbone is primarily an http server, and as such uses the eventlet.httpd module. eventlet itself is responsible only for handling http protocol-level semantics; "web framework" concepts such as URL traversal and html rendering are implemented in a separate python package, mulib."

Mulib - Second Life Wiki "Mulib is a REST web service framework built on top of eventlet.httpd."

There is almost no documentation for this code - thus this statement on the wiki page: "Sorely lacking in documentation. Please help by adding to the wiki documentation, and submitting patches with more and better docstrings for the source."

It's also worthwhile to read the history of eventlet, imho.

Typing - An Empty Tip - A Cheap Workaround

Torley also posted it to the official Linden Lab blog as a tip of the week. Official Linden Blog - Blog Archive Tip of the week: How to turn off the typing animation and sound

I just don't see how this is actually a solution though.
