Overdue Quicklies

HEY! Check out the Beat Chicks Podcast if you get a moment and you've been known to listen to those types of things.

Hope Clary and TheDiva Rockin have started a new podcast. These two dynamic SL personalities join forces to co-hostess their own music flavored multimedia experience and music lovers are the better for it.

They have already posted an introduction snippet and an interview with Cylindrian featuring three of Cyl's songs.

Cyl blogged about it here: Cylindrian meets The Beat Chicks - Cylindrian’s Grace Notes

This past Sunday I attended the Paisley Beebe Tonight Live episode that saw both a brand new TV studio set AND a return performance from the wonderulf Jaycatt nico and Frogg Marlowe!

These guys are awesome and so very worthy of your time and attention! Check out the recorded video of the interview linked over at Jaycatt's blog: Jaycatt Nico's Ramblings: Effinjay on Tonight Live!

Here is a picture of the duo performing:
BlogHUD : DrFran Babcock on Northpoint says "The new studio is completed, and my favorite duo is playing. The venue is just perfect for live music."

JueL's looking for sponsorship of Living Room #13 (What Is This Crap?) JueL's been running her venue for quite a while indeed. I had a chance to play there when she first opened this latest rendition at an open mic night she threw together.

I'll certainly be donating back some of my tips to help out. My lindens tend to flow in from live shows and back out as artist and venue tips. Rinse. Repeat.

[Edit:] if you've been known to tip venues and want to support live music I ask you this one simple question - "Are you really going to let an avatar who chose to be known as CRAP out-donate you?"

Speaking of Cyl - The Second Life Musician Showcase @ Massively. A second round of SL performers playing a RL show at San Francisco's Rock-It-Room. Cool. Hope you try to make the show, it's sure to be enjoyable.

Keiko, Cyl and Melanie performed at the Rock-It-Room when Cyl visited San Fran. I thought that whole thing was pretty cool - Keiko, Cyl and a bunch of SL musicians were going to perform at a RL show in Las Vegas which fell apart. Rather than mope about it Cyl flew to San Francisco and a group of folks did a series of RL shows streaming in-world out there. Neat.

A Few Quicklies

I haven't created any new machinema videos since S*Woodstock. Well, unless you count my presence in Nika Dreamscape's video of a MaxMiDol relaycast show.

Dolmere on YouTube

I did check the video list and I find that things are looking up a tiny bit. All of the S*Woodstock videos have gotten quite a few views. From 80 to 690 views each. Most videos still have not been rated. One video has a single 5 star rating. One video has four ratings averaging to 2 stars (up from 2 single star votes as I recall). Another has one single star rating. There's also one published comment basically asking "what the fuck is this?" I moderate the comments and have only had to remove about 5 nasty ones.

Overall - not great - but not absolutely terrible as far as I'm concerned.

I'm encouraged to do some more. Perhaps a song or two from a relaycast and another song or two from solo shows. What songs would you like to see highlighted in machinema?

I had missed this earlier post from Chestnut Rau, an SL resident I met through thesixtyone.com actually. She attended the SoHo MaxMiDol show and blogged about it complete with a screen cap.

Quicklies Abound!

I left a comment on a blog entry I saw on the SL Planet feed.

sered second life: Too late to this party

The blog entry:
"Too late to this party
Apparently U2 performed in Second Life once, somewhere in early 2006. I missed this completely at the time, probably because I wasn't actively participating in SL yet.
[...]"

My comment (which posted while this quicklies was in-the-making):
"Incorrect. U2 has never performed in SL. At the beginning of the video you link to there is a disclaimer that states "U2inSL is a role playing group which exists in support of the One campain[...] no money is being made. The group is not affiliated with the real U2."

The poorly chosen name has caused many ppl to assume U2 is actually IN SL. Wrong.

It's a bunch of U2 fans who made avatars and animations to look like U2, DJed a set of the real U2's music (as far as I can tell) and I guess donated tips to the charity campaign."

It's still the #1 feature request on the JIRA and it's still pretty much ignored out of hand. Ciaran's thoughts are spot on - an innovative solution and some new thinking is needed here.

Sunday Quicklies

That silly government of ours. Here's how to identify aircraft you may see overhead.

Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com. Second Life makes "breaking news" on CNN's site. I've not heard Space Junky yet, in fact I've not heard OF Space Junky.

I have seen Zaphod play live, and Zaphod's gotten himself a 61 artist profile with about 4 songs uploaded so far. http://www.thesixtyone.com/zaphodtheas

This is a pretty good piece of reporting - short, sweet, to the point. It does not bother mentioning any editorial about the platform but rather focuses on the musicians and what they're doing. It appears that Space Junky is fully pre-recorded choosing to focus on the immersive quality of the SL performance over the "live" component. It certainly does look like a show worth seeing - perhaps you'll see me at their next one, eh?

Interview - Paisley Beebe : The Metaverse Journal - Australia’s Virtual World News Service. Another great Paisley Beebe interview, well another of her being interviewed. Isn't great to turn the tables once in a while?

"Paisley: Nope I’m not a gamer at all, and I don’t consider SL a game. And the other virtual worlds I have read about appear to be less developed and inferior at the moment. I was fascinated with having a virtual self to start with, and sort of playing dress up dollies with my avatar, but I really just see it all as an extension of my self in RL that’s all, but lots of fun too."

Dolmere Talamasca live at Podshow Island. I'm not sure if I linked to this picture before. JVonD came to last month's SoHo island show and took this picture. I played after last minute substituion, and recently deceased, Spence Wilder. I'll miss him greatly.

Rain Vieria has been playing the intimate setting of Purgatory for a while and it seems like Rain is now getting out and about. That's a good thing - his performances are enjoyable. He plays acoustic guitar and signs sometimes, but the real treat is when he sings along with his pre-recorded tracks. I've never asked him if they're sequenced or what - how he accomplishes the accompanyment. Regardless - it's a good listen, well written original material, fun covers, a good show. New World Notes: Robin Linden on Expanding Group Limits

Remember the JIRA group limit expansion feature request? It's currently the hot JIRA item with almost 800 people signed up on it. Hamlet Au got a response from Robin Linden on the issue which sounds to me like "nice try". Let's keep the pressure on though.

They really need to rework groups badly. Groups have been bloated since I've been here, about 3 years, and in that time they managed to bloat them up even more. Let's see a leaner, cleaner implementation of groups that allows for future feature set expansion while eliminating a group limit entirely. (Not holding my breath on that one.)

BBC NEWS | UK | Parted-at-birth twins 'married'. Whoah! Someone has to do the stats on this and answer the question: "WHAT ARE THE ODDS?" Just. Wow.

Radiohead Finds Sales, Even After Downloads - New York Times. Congrats to Radiohead for attempting something new in a dying industry and proving through a point so many of us have known before.

I think this translates over into the SL world too. I can listen to most every SL artist almost any day of the week. Go to their show, hear them play their songs, interact in a way a CD can't. Yet... I still want to own their CD. I still want to hold that little piece of plastic in my hands and import it into my iTunes library. I'm eager to see what artwork they've created to go with the CD, if any, and I'm eager to read their liner notes.

Anyway, congrats to Radiohead :)

More, Even More Quicklies

I had a bunch of links I wanted to share so I'm doubling up today instead of letting them get too stale.

BlogHUD : Another breakthrough for blogging. This is REALLY very cool. It strikes me as exactly the type of thing I would expect from Jacek Antonelli - but this one came from Dedric Mauriac. (a user of thesixtyone, btw)

Dedric modified his client's XUI settings in order to expand the number of allowed characters in the postcard submission form. He tested through with various sized posts to find the actual max number of characters that the asset server would allow through. Well done, Dedric!

Crisis hotline crisis. I did NOT get this shot while visitin San Francisco but I would have LOVED to. Funny stuff indeed.

Torley Linden has discovered a free software tool that may help out folks like Crap Mariner who have been casually experimenting with Machinema in SL.

A new, free movie recorder that works with Second Life — WeGame - Torley Lives. For those poor folks stuck on Windows this might just be a tool worth investigating. Let me know if you create anything cool with it and I'll link it up! Have fun out there.

I was going to link to Vint's screenshot vs. photograph post in a previous quiclikes. It's my opinion that it's not photography but she makes some pretty compelling points in her blog entry. Why Second Life photographs are NOT screenshots | VintFalken.com

Now Hamlet Au has posted a survey on his blog asking people their opinion. I'm over there and voting Images, Screenshot, or another term since that's still where my opinion lies. New World Notes: Photographer or Image Maker?

I don't feel terribly strongly about it either way - I just lean more towards "it's a capture of a computer created screen display" therefore image or screenshot.

Pass Another Round of Quicklies, Please

Kitten Lulu - Blog Archive - Second Life hates Mac laptops. Sorry that Kitten is having trouble, but this is a blanket statement that I can't endorse :) I use a MacBook Pro for SL most of the time. It's an older one than she has and it has an ATI, not an Nvidea, video card in it. I've had glowing moments of reliability here and there with SL as I suspect most Windows users would tend to agree with - reliability and stability are not words that go hand in hand with Second Life regardless of platform I think.

Second Life Art News: music immersion - Komuso Tokugawa MoShang Zhao. Nice machinema video of the recent efforts from Komuso and MoShang. Machinema, and blog entry, created by Osprey Therian.

Wednesday Morning Quicklies

Well Hello There, Robin. on Flickr - Photo Sharing! Great ambiguosly gay (SL reference there, fyi) photo of Batman and Robin on the set of the old television series. You mean to tell me that they didn't actually climb buildings?

Wooster Collective: Seen On A Draw Bridge in Amsterdam. The rising tide...

Mambo Welles shared this with me: YouTube - Elvis Costello - (I Dont Want To Go To) Chelsea. He thought it was cute considering 1Chelsea Daggar is at my SL live shows most of the time.

Gotta love this classic video. What a poor transfer - I guess that adds some feeling to the classic nature of it though.

Of course, I suppose this video is much more accurate, huh? YouTube - The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger Full Vid.

First '08 Quicklies

Anderson and the Would Be Thieves with Grace Buford - Cylindrian Check out Cylindrian collaborating on another Atlanta musician's work!

WOOT! Go girl!

The song to listen to is "Coward Featuring Grace Buford". It's currently the second song down on the track listing. Unfortunately downloading is disabled for their tracks though. I don't go back to MySpace for repeat listens - that website bothers me, really.

My take?

1) MySpace is still one ugly, nasty, weird website which I do not understand.

2) You can see Grace/Cyl in the track artwork picture while listening to the song! She's on the far right standing up at a mic.

3) Her voice is so distinct. You can really pick her out easily.

4) She sounds GREAT on the whole song. Just great on the call and response - "Never showed your face". Very powerful. The oos and woos throughout are really well done as well and fit the song's sound so very well.

I enjoyed the listen. Go get one of your own.

My resolution for 2008: Mute (What Is This Crap?). This is one of Crap's most amusing posts to date - and that's saying a lot.

I don't go for new year's resolutions, even ones that are tongue-in-cheek, but perhaps you'd like to play along and answer his question.

His list of people to mute just cracks me up. The LME DJ comment is awesome and I know he and I are not the only two who feel that way (though maybe not quite to the extreme he's taking it in '08). I also wonder if I'll get muted next year as "performers I have absolutely no interest in hearing" is subjective. *sniff* I like Crap's upside down couch at my shows. Argh! :)

2007's Last Quicklies Entry

I had been missing DJing my iTunes music into Second Life. Luckily other slightly bored people with similar bents towards random silliness are on my friends list.

Transformation (What Is This Crap?)

BlogHUD : Edloe party continues

BlogHUD : Cylindrian Rutabaga as a Hobo

Once again I had a ton of fun streaming people's picks from my personal iTunes collection. Thanks to the ton of people who came out to make the impromptu party a happening place to be, and for the many and varied music requests.

I DJed once more since then. Just last night in fact. A bunch of oldbie friends from the Shelter and some newer ones as well joined me with Mallow and Vie at Purgatory! WOOT!.

EricAtRandom posted a bunch of pics from the night:

Speaking of Dol streaming: BlogHUD : "Dol rocking his bones on Corsica Island from 3pm SLT to 4pm" Posted by Melynn Dreamscape when I was playing Corsica Island along with Virtual Live Band and Noma Falta.

Noma's accompaniment for her live show is her partner, Mr. Woopsy Dazy. Noma is a bass player and singer and let me tell you that she has a lovely voice! She did some really great Janis Joplin covers during her set at Corsica. Her music includes Woopsy on guitar and bg vocals, and some backing tracks including drums.

I saw Noma at the Pontiac Garage open mic goodbye last hoorah show and asked her about the backing tracks:

You: How do you do your backing tracks? Drum machine? Pre-recorded hired musicians?
Noma Falta: /recorded in my studio except bass vocals and lead guitar

All cool except that slash character! WOOT!.

Oh, and you can find more info about her over at that myspace thing. There's currently one song posted to listen to - give it a listen and tell me I'm wrong about that voice. I dare you!

Speaking of BlogHUD: BlogHUD : Finding the day of the week . Open source LSL free for the taking in-world.

Akela and Ordinal tell us about a JIRA issue that deserves a vote: SVC-1125 "Inter-sim teleports do not provide a red beacon unless made directly from the main map, so sims without point to point TP are disadvantaged".

Played Pontiac Respects and a Handful of Quicklies

I just finished playing an open mic set at Pontiac Garage over on Motorati Island.

"Pontiac has decided to pursue other advertising venues."

That means as of tomorrow there will be no more Pontiac Garage - as a live music venue or as a Second Life build.

You can read more about it at the official Motorati website: http://www.motoratilife.com/. Especially the entry Ladies & Gentlemen, Motorati Has Left The Grid.

It's a rather sad day, imho.
I'm glad I got a chance to play the stage and to say goodbye.

Recursive Escalator Sign on Flickr - Photo Sharing! I so want to hold my option key and cam around this sign to see if it's hiding something more menacing. How amazing is this if it's truly a sign erected to warn about the sign once erected?

GPS baby Jesus stolen again, found across the street - Engadget. The comments on this and the linked newspaper article are a bit much so I suggest skipping them. The title of the linked news article is a bit much as well though. Anyway, the core story is pretty amusing though.

YouTube - The Most Amazing Accident On Road Produced By Rain. All one can say when watching this video is WOW! That's one poorly managed drainage system.

One comment does a better job of describing the footage than the poster: "good old Calgary Alberta Canada, that was on Glenmore Trail and the camera was to monitor the flow of traffic because of the construction that was going on. Hail plugged the storm drain and caused a hail dam. when it broke free water cam from the surrounding communities which are up to 50 metres ( 160 feet) higher. it was all clean rain water"

The Death of High Fidelity : Rolling Stone. Yet another article pointing out that compressed compression compressing compression is making today's releases sound terrible compared to yesteryear's dynamic music.

While there I discovered that Kim deal's The Breeders has a new album due out in April of '08! WOOT! I'll be buying that for sure.

Quick Links For Saturday

I'm playing two live basstastically perverted shows today in Second Life, Saturday Dec 29th.

3PM SLT, one hour
Corsica Island after Virtual Live band and other great acts: Corsica Island SLURL

7PM SLT, min. one hour
Purgatory club. There is a possibility that there may be an act on after me. If not I will play longer than an hour. Purgatory SLURL. Note - this teleport leaves you in a box in front of a teleporter. You can change the destination from "Upper Reaches" by pressing the up button, to "Furnace" by clicking the down arrow. Click the down arrow as I play the stage in the furnace each time. Then sit on the teleporter to be transported.

atomic-raygun "Running around Madcow Cosmos's Installation". Awww... they're so darned cute. /me wants one!

Daily Kos: Flying spaghetti monster defeats anti-evolution FL school board. WOOT. Great read.

Gazelle Outsmarts a Cheetah and Hyena - Video. This reminds me of the possum dad and daughter in the movie Over The Hedge. I love it.

Fly your Edloe flags at half-staff, please. (What Is This Crap?). Crap Mariner tells us about the demise of the Traveling Avatar podcast. More info at SLNN: The Traveling Avatar's podcast is riding off into the sunset.

As you well know I'm not much of a podcast listener. I barely listened to two or three of the TA shows. However, I'm sad to see it go as I figure it was a good resource for new residents from what I heard.

I have listened to most of the recent episodes of Podmafia as well as tuning in to listen to the live TalkShoe episode that they ran recently. I did not participate mostly because I didn't want to create a new account on a new site that I'll likely never return to.

iTWire - Mammoth update ahead for Leopard. Mac OS X Leopard is currently in public release version 10.5.1. Apparently Apple has just started testing developer builds of 10.5.2. These Apple Developer Connection builds which are bound by an NDA as far as I know are pre-release versions for use in testing.

I don't think it's anywhere near intentional but rather an oversight but Tateru Nino over at Massivley posted about an incompatibility between 10.5.2 (private beta test) and Second Life: Beware of the leopard! - Massively. Please note that the wording is a bit dire for a first release of a private beta test.

GROUPS REVISITED
Verbal Stew: SecondLife Group Limit - Who speaks for the masses? We're all entitled to our own opinions, such is the beauty of life. JellyBean Madison sees no reason for more than 25 groups. Some 450+ people do according to the JIRA bug/feature request, myself included.

I do agree with Jelly that the second they raise it to 50 or 100 or whatever people will bitch that they want more. However, IMHO, there are valid business reasons to be in groups, even lots of groups.

I also happen to agree with Erbo Evans that a resource like this should be none, one or infinite.

There are some suggestions of splitting out groups into different types of groups. Removing the permissions structure from basic groups which serve for IM and notices only, etc. Even charging an extra fee for premium account holders to have the ability to belong to more groups is a fine idea.

We'll see wht comes of it all - if you haven't already I highly suggest you throw your vote in the JIRA entry.

(Group limit and JIRA issue tracker link included in my previous post on the subject here: http://www.lovelymachine.com/Dolmere/2007/12/group_limit_jira_feature_request.html)
