Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe event listing

Note: This is the farewell to Dolmere as a booking agent show. After you TP in just sit on the elevator seats by the purple sign or click the SLURL at the bottom of this description.

This week we have Flaming Moe from 5:30-6:30PM SLT.Then we have Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe from 6:30-7:30PM SLT. Flaming Moe will be playing our stage for the first time while Jay and Frogg are returning to us. It's possible that they will treat us to some relaycasting as well! Ending the run of live music I've been booking at the Shelter with Jay and Frogg is fitting since they were the first act to play for us!

Please remember to tip the musicians - their tip jars will be on stage near their swaying and playing avatars. If you enjoy attending these events at The Shelter please also consider donating to the venue - there are a few donation pillars in the Sky Stage for just such generosity.

Changes

If you haven't noticed I've not been able to post to my blog recently. Things IRL are even more hectic than usual lately and I've been unable to find spare cycles. When I do find spare cycles my computer has been freezing up when running Second Life making for a very frustrating experience. I may need to get it serviced or maybe just give it a break :)

This Thursday, the 10th, I have cancelled live music at the Shelter in Swinside. I won't be available to host again and I have no one booked so rather than rush things I'll skip the show.

OK, I'm now rightfully pissed. Tonight will be the second live show, two weeks, without an event listing posted. This is because I'm getting a 404 error message when I try to submit events! I have tried it from Safari and Firefox on one machine with no luck. I've tried it from Safari on a completely different machine - no luck. What is going on here?

I really wish I had an idea of what the problem is. It can't be my local network either since I've had this problem in both browsers from hotel rooms as well. Argh!

FireEyes Fauna stepped up to come through here by posting the event for me. Thanks FireEyes! However, when he went to post the event guess what happened to him? Guess!

That's right - a fuckin' 404 error. He got a 404 error message. I'm NOT the only one. I have contacted live help twice and they sent me off to email support@ll. I did - and I got a form letter response saying something like "in an effort to meet a 24 hour response time here's a bunch of crappy links that have nothing to do with your issue". I searched the links. Irrelevant. I have replied to the form letter, as advised if the issue were to persist, twice now. One more time: Argh.

404_WTF.jpg

[UPDATE]
I contacted live help for a third time about this issue. This time instead of suggesting I email via support Sejong (who had been the one to reply earlier, btw) noted that they're now aware of it as an issue.

[13:50] Sejong Linden: Greetings
[13:50] Sejong Linden: We are aware of the problem at this time
[13:50] Dolmere Talamasca: greetings again Sejong
[13:50] Sejong Linden: we apologize for the inconvenience
[13:50] Sejong Linden: are you on 1.14 client version now?
[13:50] Dolmere Talamasca: excellent, thanks
[13:50] Dolmere Talamasca: I have not upgraded my client, no
[13:50] Sejong Linden: alright..
[13:51] Sejong Linden: the webmaster has been notified
[13:51] Sejong Linden: and it is being fixed
[13:51] Dolmere Talamasca: Another fella having the same issue HAS upgraded his client
[13:51] Sejong Linden: please bear with us as we are trying hard to fix the problem that is causing some of our resident
[13:51] Dolmere Talamasca: he's on a PC, I'm on Mac
[13:51] Dolmere Talamasca: so IE/Firefox/Safari - all the same problem
[13:51] Sejong Linden: alright, i will tell the webmaster to update with the issue as soon as possible
[13:52] Sejong Linden: thank you for your patience
[13:52] Dolmere Talamasca: thanks. May I post this information on my latest blog post referencing this issue?
[13:52] Sejong Linden: sure.. just be noted that not all residents are having this issue :)
[13:53] Dolmere Talamasca: duly noted :) Thanks.
[13:53] Sejong Linden: thank you and have a great day!

I first reported this problem over a week ago as noted in an earlier entry.

BTW - as with earlier optional updates I have chosen not to download and install. We're back to the Universal versus platform specific builds argument. Having seen the source code for the Mac OS X viewer it's clear that they CAN build PPC/Intel specific builds but choose not to. So I choose not to download every single double sized download offered :)

[Update 2]
Mera Pixel just found the problem! In trying to post the same event she ALSO got a 404 error. However, she tinkered and found the problem. I was including an anchor HTML tag to make the SLURLs clickable. She removed the HTML and posted the URLs only and the event posted!

So, trying to make it simple for someone to telelport directly to the Sky Stage instead of hunting around for the elevator while it rezzes was what introduced the problem. Yikes. Tonight's event is now posted thanks to Mera and work arounds for really, really bad form validation on LL's part.

Charles and Spaceman Were Great

Charles Coleman headlined at the Shelter in Swinside's Sky Stage this past Thursday. Opening for him was Spaceman Opus. The crowd was unusually small. I'm not sure what to blame that on actually. It may be the lack of an event listing considering I was unable to get past that funky 404 error on the events listing page. It may be that there were a lot of other live events going on, but I'm just not sure what else was being run in that timeslot. Anyway, regardless of the relatively low turn-out the evening was quite enjoyable.

Spaceman played a set of nice cover tunes. Just like last time his microphone volume when talking between songs was painfully low. Quite an odd details considering that when playing his mix was pretty good.

Charles started his set by playing covers of music by other Second Life musicians! He played "Mattie's Runaway Train" by Cylindrian Rutabaga to get started. Then he moved on to "Never Argue (With the Weather)" by Frogg Marlowe. It was a really fun set that started off with a great tone.

I was hosting the show while connected from a really poor hotel wireless connection. Unfortunately for me that meant several SL crashes and relaunches and some very odd behavior. When trying to jump on a dance ball I had several extended moments worthy of acid trips.

All alone and turned around:

Almost alone and still vertically challenged:

Live Music Tonight - Shelter in Swinside

Tonight we have Spaceman Opus opening for Charles Coleman.

Thursday, March 22, 2007

5:30-6:30PM SLT Spaceman Opus

6:30-7:30PM SLT Charles Coleman

Unfortunately I was receiving a 404 error the last few days when trying to post an event on the SL website. I contacted live help and their support email with no answer as to why I was unable to post events. Hope to see you at our Swinside Sky Stage tonight despite the lack of an event listing!

[Update]
Yup, the event web page is still giving me the same exact error when trying to save. After I click the submit button on my event I am taken to the url http://secondlife.com/events/edit.php where the content reads:

"404: File Not Found

The requested URL /events/edit.php was not found on this server.

We have made significant changes to our website recently, so it's possible that the content you're looking for is now in another location. You may want to try navigating from the homepage at http://secondlife.com.

We apologize for the inconvenience. If you continue to receive this message please feel free to send a note to webmaster@secondlife.com."

If I HAD been able to post the two live shows they would have read:

"

This week it's Spaceman Opus bringing us one hour of original and cover songs. (5:30-6:30 SLT) followed by Charles Coleman! Charles will play his unique set of covers and original songs for the next hour. (6:30-7:30 SLT)

Please remember to tip the musicians - their tip jars will be on stage near their swaying and playing avatars. If you enjoy attending these events at The Shelter please also consider donating to the venue - there are blue pillars in the Sky Stage for just such generosity.

Also, if you TP straight into Swinside instead of using a SLURL to get to the event you'll want to look for our elevators. For live music night we put out a nice easy to find LARGE PURPLE sign with four direct elevator seats underneath it. Just click and sit on any of the silver disc seats under the purple sign to join us upstairs. When it rezzes for you the sign and discs will look like this:

Spence Wilder and Cylindrian Rutabaga Rocked The Shelter!

Thursday night Spence Wilder and Cylindrian Rutabaga played two hours of music at the Shelter in Swinside. Man, oh man, was it a great show! Spence was scheduled to play from 5:30-6:30PM SLT and Cylindrian was scheduled to start at 6:30 and end at 7:30. Instead they decided to surprise us all, and oh what a surprise it was. You see... Cyl and Spence live in the same area of the US. So they performed the concert from the same physical location and treated the crowd to a wonderful half hour or so of duets.

Live Music Tonight!

Details

Tonight we have Spence Wilder opening for Cylindrian Rutabaga at the Shelter in Swinside. Spence has played here once before and his set was very well received by the group. Cylindrian has played the Shelter in Swinside a few times before - each time extrememly well received.

In fact we listened to a live show one Saturday that Cylindrian had organized at the Royal Bean cafe :)

Anyway, we hope to see you tonight at 5:30PM SLT for Spence and 6:30PM SLT for Cylindrian.

Also note that Jaycatt Nico is booking live shows at the AmphibiCatt gardens. Tonight is Charles Coleman from 5PM-6PM SLT. Hopefully the group watching Charles will join us over in the Sky Stage at the Shelter in Swinside for the remainder of our live music evening.

If you're like me and cannot make it to Georgia to see these two play on the same bill then join us in Swinside this Thursday to hear some great musicians playing their hearts out.

Pics From Royal Bean Kickoff

Yesterday we had a bit of an event at the Shelter in Swinside.

Cylindrian Rutabaga and friends were performing live at a coffee house in North Carolina named the Royal Bean. As a bonus they were streaming the event into Second Life and we at the Shelter in Swinside were lucky enough to be one of the locations where the stream was made available.

More Changes For Tonight's Show!

I heard from Kaklick Martin and his cold has not gotten any better. His voice is cracking and he will be unable to perform a set for us this evening. He's checking to see if he can drum up a replacement but I have offered to allow the opening and closing acts to play longer if they would like. This evening now looks like:

5:30-6:30 Spence Wilder
6:30-7:00 DJ Dol or Spence Wilder reprise [Edit: Spence Wilder will play a little over and Kaklick will brave hurtting himself to play a 30 minute set just for us! Come on down.]
7:00-7:30 DJ Dol or Spaceman Opus early
7:30-8:30 Spaceman Opus

Sorry folks, these things happen. This return to live music at the Shelter has had its fair share of scheduling conflicts but we'll still put on a good show and a fun gathering. Come on down and hang out with us :)

Original independent music and modern technology combine to bring a performance from a live music venue to a worldwide listening audience. This Saturday the 10th of February the Royal Bean plays host to this cutting edge event which will be broadcast to the internet via an online virtual world named Second Life.

Their website, www.secondlife.com has the following to say about the virtual world: "We are a global community working together to build a new online space for creativity, collaboration, commerce, and entertainment. We strive to bridge cultures and welcome diversity. We believe in free expression, compassion and tolerance as the foundation for community in this new world."

Showtime's "The L Word" is the main corporate sponsor of this Java Jam event. "The L Word" is quickly gaining worldwide exposure through their presence in Second Life. You can visit “The L Word’s” website to find more information and a link to create your own account. As their webpage states "Sign up and join the more than 2,000,000 people enjoying Second Life. Changes For This Thursday's Live Show

The lineup is changing for this Thursday. Cylindrian Rutabaga has some RL commitments to take care of and unfortunately has had to cancel her appearance. Kaklick Martin has volunteered to take her 6:30 slot. I'm working to find an alternate opening act.

Also, Spaceman Opus has volunteered to play a special "closing" slot. He'll take the stage after Kaklick at 7:30PM.

Shelter and Live Music Event News + More

Coal recently posted an entry on her blog regarding the Shelter. It looks like she'll become the "facilities manager" of the Swinside area and the land will be tansferred to the regular Shelter landowner account. I was unable to attend that Friday meeting unfortunately. I did attend a follow-up meeting yesterday to discuss events. Coal will be managing the schedule at Swinside and the two Shelter locations will do their best to offer more events while minimizing scheduling conflicts.

Live music starts again in Swinside starting February 8th - we'll have two hours instead of one each Thursday night now. There will be an opening act on from 5:30-6:30PM SLT. Note that it's now 5:30 instead of a 5PM start to allow time between the end of Building Shelter and the start of the music event, as well as allowing some time for west coast U.S. SLitizens to get home and logged in after work. The headlining act will perform from 6:30-7:30 PM SLT.

The current live music schedule as of the moment can be seen below the fold.

Cylindrian Recap and You Can Go Home Again

Well, this time I managed to take some screen shots of the concert. It's so tough to remember to snap pictures when hosting live music events. First off I'm busy enjoying the music. Second I'm busy enjoying the music :)

CylShow2.jpg

Cyindrian's show, just before the holiday break, was a really enjoyable one for me. She got her stream working just in time after some technical problems earlier in the day. The SL client itself was acting odd - the music player was cutting out - acting kinda jittery. For the few that knew her music stream URL pasting it into iTunes or Winamp solved the problem and the stream sounded smooth and beautiful.

Cylindrian Rutabaga Tonight!

Just a reminder that tonight Cylindrian Rutabaga is playing live at the Shelter in Exile!

Here is the event listing

December 16, 2006

Interview: Cylindrian Rutabaga (Take Two)

Cylindrian Rutabaga will be playing at the Shelter in Exile this upcoming Thursday - the 21st of December at 5pm SLT. The following is a slightly edited interview with her in preparation for her return to the Shelter in Exile Sky Stage.

Dolmere: Welcome back to the Shelter in Exile Sky Stage, Cylindrian
Cylindrian Rutabaga: hi
Dolmere: Last time we left off with me asking about your children and the fact that you home school :)
Cylindrian Rutabaga: oh yes
Dolmere: Let's move back into the musical range for a bit
Dolmere: How did you discover live music in Second Life? What made you decide to start playing shows?
Cylindrian Rutabaga: Well... I had friends that I would play online open mic's with in another chat program, you may have heard of Mel Cheeky, Russell Eponym, and Neil Morrison?
Dolmere: Indeed

Interview: Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe

The event listing for this performance

Dolmere: Let's start this interview out on a light note, shall we?
Dolmere: maybe a D - but played very lightly with a kinda twang too
Jaycatt Nico: Okay :D
Dolmere: Have you been banned from posting comments to any blogs?
Frogg Marlowe: Not currently, but I plan to try harder
Jaycatt Nico: I don't normally post comments to blogs, and when I do they're usually positive
Dolmere: OK, so neither of you are secretly prok thing alts I see.
Jaycatt Nico: lol
Frogg Marlowe: hey, prok's a friend
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Frogg Marlowe: he's been rough with me, too, but I think he means well
Dolmere: Yeah, but had to throw that in since it's all the blog traffic today :)
Frogg Marlowe: lol
Jaycatt Nico: Oh yeah? Man am I out of touch

Kaklick Plays the Shelter in Exile

I remembered to take some pictures this time!
Here are some pics from last night's Kaklick Martin performance at the Shelter in Exile. Regardless of a few bumps (like a rolling restart before and sim crash during) the event went well. I enjoyed the music and the company.

Kaklick was scheduled for 5-6PM but due to the problems that popped up and his interest in entertaining he stuck around until 6:30. Both Kaklick and Melvin Took used the Wicked Karma Live stream to get their music to us, which gave them a side benefit of performing for anyone else who might have been listening in other sims or out-world.

Travis Lambert made it out to catch some of the set! Poor puppy has been so busy with work lately that he's not been in-world much at all.

Melvin Took Recap

Melvin Took aka Peter Greenstone played at the Shelter in Exile this evening. I really enjoyed the hour he chose to share with us. His "unplugged" set, as he calls it, was a joy to listen to.

Temporary Home Change

I've recently changed my home location again. Now that the fucktard is gone from our lives the Shelter in Isabel/Wingo is returning to normal. Soon Travis will be back in Second Life and we'll all rejoice - then Izzy can recover completely. In the meantime I've had my home set to Exile so I login there when I first connect or when I reconnect after SL kicks me off or the sim I'm in crashes.

However, the good folks at Exile have been putting up holiday decorations. I remember being tweaked a slight bit by some holiday decorations in Isabel last year. For the most part it was just one decorated tree over the freebie table most of the season and I was able to cope with that. At this point there's just way too much decorating in Exile for me to cope with. I've set my home location back to Isabel where none of the holiday disease has sprung up yet. We'll see how the hiding out in relative safety works for the next month.

More Exile Live Pics

MeraTalk - The Purpleness that is Mera Pixel - Live @ The Shelter in Exile - Part II

I hadn't noticed for some reason but Mera Pixel also made a blog post with some pictures from the recent live shows at Exile. She has wonderful pictures from the first live event in Exile - Jaycatt and Frogg as well as a few pics of the second show with Cylindrian.

Mera says: "(Vanity side-note: Frogg showed up and said I was his kind of people after I made a particularly geeky comment. Yay!)" - Frogg is, of course, right!

I'm so happy I have friends like Mera Pixel, Coal Nelson, Sumar Morgan and Reina Quine - all of whom have been so giving and helpful in setting up our live event space.

Finally - Pictures

I finally got around to posting pictures in my Cylindrian Rutabaga interview. It took me a while to get around to formatting, uploading and including them, sorry.

While I'm at it here are some pictures that I took the day that Jaycatt and Frogg played at Exile - the first live music concert at Exile!

Cylindrian Rutabaga Interview

The event listing for this show

Cylindrian Rutabaga will be playing a one hour set of her live music for us at the Shelter in Exile this Thursday from 5PM - 6PM Second Life time. I had the pleasure of chatting with her for some interview questions.

I was not able to get through all of the interview questions I had prepared due to time constraints. I think this is a good start regardless and we'll have her back again soon I'm sure.

Interview: Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe

In preparation for Thursday's 5PM show by Jaycatt and Frogg to kick off weekly live music at the Shelter in Exile I decided to interview the dynamic duo.

I've done a bit more editing on this interview than I expected to. I removed login/logoff notices of course, but I also removed time stamps, edited a few typos and misspellings. The biggest change is that I reodered some of the questions to try to make things flow a bit easier for the reader.

Topic we cover range from the musical to the personal. If you continue on below the fold expect to read about their thoughts on the state of music in Second Life, their experience with relaycasting, their upcoming recording session for a new duet CD, and what what they enjoy in SL beyond performing music for us to appreciate.

You'll also get a hint as to what MTV was doing in Seattle recently.

Welcome

Dolmere: Hi Jaycatt, Frogg, welcome to the new Shelter in Exile stage
Jaycatt Nico:: Thanks!
Dolmere: If you pan your camera back you'll see the place is shaped like an "L"
Dolmere: The inside of the "L" is where the 3 regions meet

Dolmere: Both: Did you vote today?
Jaycatt Nico:: No I didn't
Frogg Marlowe:: vote?
Jaycatt Nico:: Do we need to elaborate, that kind of thing? hehe
Dolmere: No :)

Live Music - At The Shelter In Exile!!!

I have some progress to report regarding the Shelter in Exile. I'm working on getting live shows running on a weekly basis.

First we need an area to place the event. Mera is actually building us a beautiful skybox stage that we can leave setup permanently all week long. We'll have a Meravator or maybe a Meravator v2 to allow people to quickly access the sybox from the main Exile hangout area.

For now we'll have a one hour show per week with select musicians. Jaycatt Nico and Frogg Marlowe have agreed to play our first event for us! They'll be at our new skybox this Thursday the 9th of November at 5PM SLT. This will be the debut of live music at Exile so I hope ALL of you will come help us try to MAX OUT 3 SIMS!

Cylindrian Rutabaga has already agreed to play the second show. For now we're tentatively setup for the Thursday at 5PM slot on the 16th of November. We'll of course want to get feedback from the first show and decide if this time slot will work out for us.

One of the intents is to provide entertainment for the new folks who occasionally come to the Shelter and also to our frequent visitors. Hopefully it's a bit of a win-win as new residents will get early exposure to live music in Second Life and the musicians might have a portion of their crowds filled out with eager new ears. Another of the basic intents here is to ensure that the musician gets fair compensation for their hour long set.

Reina Quine is working on acquiring sponsorship to ensure that we can afford to pay the musicians who play for us. We'll put out an advertisement for the sponsor and be sure to mention that they're our proud community sponsor making these shows possible. At this time the goal would be a minimum of 2,000L$ per week to allow us at least one good show a week with the option of scheduling more.
