The Secret Life of... memes?

I've fallen behind on the not-a-meme challenges again. I didn't even get around to doing the challenge I proposed. And what do I have to show for myself? Noth- oh, wait. New laptop. Right. :) It's shiny and sexy and filled with Vistahatehatehatehatehate. Vista is very pretty in an evil no-I-don't-want-to-do-what-you-want-me-to-do sort of way. But the shift key is just a little off and so I keep hitting the up arrow and being miserable. I'm still learning my way around it, so bear with me.

Anyway, that's not the secret that I'll reveal in answer to Vint's challenge. Below the crease, my revelations...

Not-A-Meme Challenge #9

Woot! I get to propose the challenge this Sunday! What should I have folks seek out? I've only done a few of the challenges, but happily Dolmere's been keeping track of what has been done.

My challenge is somewhat related to Jacek's... what has SL brought to your RL? And don't say "a better appreciation for my loving family" because we won't believe you. :D

My response coming later.

Blah blah blog

You may not have noticed (and definitely won't have if you're reading this in a feed reader or some consolidated blog rolling thingie) but I changed the image over at the left edge of my page. Just to switch things up for a bit. Also added a twitter module on the bottom right, which, no doubt, I'll be as bad at updating as I am this page. In fact, if you look at it tonight, it will tell you I'm currently reading.

Well.

Technically I guess I am, right? I'm reading what I type.

I feel like I dropped my keys down the elevator shaft!

Um, oops. So I forgot my blog password. *blush* Yup. Firefox has been helpfully filling it in for me, and... somehow the autofiller got scrambled. :P Took me forever to figure out how to go in and fix it - Movable Type's "password hint" that I entered was a hint for me to remember my password (which is what you would think a "password hint" would be), but apparently I was supposed to put down my birthplace, because that's what the password recovery thing asks for and compares to what you put in the "password hint" field. Blah.

Anyway, quick summary of what you missed because I couldn't babble about it here: intended to take a holiday, had to cancel last minute due to family medical stupidity, work, work and more work, bought some stuff at the Ayeshe's Angels yard sale, and the weeks went by in a blur other than that.

I'll be back to posting "normally" (well, normal for me, lately) soon.

Raindrops on Roses

Okay, so I'm trying to keep up with the not-a-meme. I feel like I'm running with the cool kids or something. ;) This week's challenge is courtesy of Mera Pixel, "What you like most about SL". I was going to say the people, but she says we're not allowed to. My first instinct was to plop up some shots of some of the great builds I've seen around SL, and claim my fave thing is peeping inside other people's imagination... but you know, that's cool, but it's not what keeps me coming back, even when I've had a crappy day at work and am desperate to get away from the computer.

So Dolmere has decided we're doing a "not a meme" blog thingie where one of us posts a challenge twice a week and the rest of us blog about it. This week: Name Two Newbie Locations, or more politically-correct: "name two new resident locations".
Shelter Shenanigans

Friday was a big day - a bunch of the Shelter regulars met to discuss the fate of Swinside - or to listen to Travis discuss it anyway. :) The meeting was going really well until it took a left turn at language rules and went plummetting off the rails. It was a good hour of struggling before things were back on track. Is fuck still a swear word if you use it as an exclamation and not to denote a sexual act? What's the difference between offensive nudity and ignorant nudity. If you haven't got any "bits" to show, are you still naked if you take your clothes off?

The Lost Posting

I hate it when I've a nice entry all written out and then something happens and I lose it all. :( I wrote last night about hosting my first full length episode of Building Shelter yesterday. I was poking around doing some other stuff and hadn't hit publish yet. And *wham* laptop overheated and I lost the whole kit-and-caboodle. No, I do not know what a caboodle is.
Who wants a holiday from SL? Not me!

I was jonesing for SL-contact because I'm on holidays in the UK and the laptop decided it doesn't want to run the new upgrade. :P But I lucked out - by a weird bit of coincidence, right when I was online trying to decide where to go for supper, Mike Mission was on his way to meet a few other SLers at a pub. Henrietta IM'ed plum Hartnell (who had to back out of the pub night because of dental-work stuff) and he called Mike, then passed Hen Mike's mobile number (who passed it to me through gmail) and I called Mike. He wasn't far from my hotel and was kind enough to swing by in a taxi and the two of us went off to the pub.

The pub, whose name I don't remember (Red Lion? Maybe?) was down a side street off another side street. I might be able to find it again by triangulating on the restaurant with the fun fabric flames outside it. Maybe. At any rate I got to meet Kumi and I7o and the four of us (plus Mr. Kumi - pity him as he had to put up with our SL chatter all night) had a great time.

Woo post #100

Yeah, it's kinda lame that I'm only at 100 and Dol's at something like 283 (actually, I could go look at the stats to see the exact number, but I'm too damn lazy). Speaking of lazy, I hope everyone had a lovely holiday, if, indeed, they did have a holiday. :)

I had to work this morning, but it wasn't too bad because apparently the holiday had everyone else was in a good mood too. :) This afternoon, I made bread (from scratch for the second time ever, go me!) and did a lot of little online chores, like uninstalling Norton AntiVirus (which hates SL and keeps telling me it's viral, "Hello? That's the point!") and replacing it with AVG. So far so good. I also tried to go hang out on the latest preview grid, which crashed me at login repeatedly (even after a complete un- and re-install). Hrm. Ominous. How do you bug report when you can't actually get to the Help menu?

Mmmmusic, Professor!

One more picture of the Mel Cheeky concert:

She really does have a great voice. :) After the concert I made my way over to the Bighorn Lodge, where my buddy Henrietta Strangelove was spinning world music. :) There were some streaming issues and Joseph wound up giving out the stream's URL so that we could listen using iTunes or Winamp.

I've never been entirely clear (please feel free to add to my comments and 'splain to me, Lucy) on how streaming through SL works - does the music actually get fed through the SL servers or does the client just supply QuickTime on your computer with the URL and the connection is between you and them? I always thought it was the latter, but there's been so many complaints of poor streaming quality in SL of late that I wonder if maybe it isn't the former - Stream Eaten By Packet Loss, News at 11.

...and because with me it's either feast or famine: here's the third post of the evening. :D
